went to a public elementary school in the 90s before they had mandatory school uniforms in 1998. At my school you knew who was poor and who were flashy. With uniforms, everybody is the same where kids won’t get picked on for not having cool clothes like their classmates.
kids know that anyway. Some have “better” khakis than others, or some have old dingy shoes vs others, or just the way their personal hygiene is so while in theory school uniforms may cut that out in, in reality it does not. Now what school uniforms do that is a benefit imo, is it doesn’t allow kids to wear trashy shite to school like those supreme or backwoods hoodies, or those gross t shirts with Rick and morty on them. Parents of pre teens and teenagers know what I’m talking about

My son got two haircuts leading up to school this week and still needs another before going back Monday. Hair cannot touch ears. Uniform is easy, only 1 acceptable pair of pants, black socks and shoes, black belt…shirts can vary unless they need to wear a tie.

Mine doesn't wear uniforms anymore in high school but she did PK-8th grade.

Same here.

I hated wasting money on them. I'd rather spend money on clothes they can wear outside of school too.

Meh, uniform clothes aren’t expensive and at least their nicer regular clothes don’t get work out as fast.

South Louisiana seems to be the only place in which public school kids wear uniforms

South Louisiana is the only place where people think things that happen in the world only happen in South Louisiana because they never leave their fricking home parish. True story.

Maybe, but I have to say that it isn’t a thing up here. It seems odd to me.

The public schools that require uniforms are trying to make parents think that the schools are as good as parochial schools. The appearance is a psychological ploy. The real question is, why do people send their children to government run schools?

We'd spend about $400 on uniforms at the beginning of the school year and usually have to buy more in the middle of the year.

They are cheaply made, fade etc so basically just thrown away at the end of the year.

I'm glad mine doesn't have to wear them anymore.

Louisiana is full of a bunch of culture who just can't follow dress codes so the school system nazis think it is a great idea to make the kids conform. We lived in B'ham from 2000 to 2005 and none of the public schools wore uniforms and they still don't today. My biggest regret was moving back to Louisiana. Wish we would have stayed out of state. In 2 years both my kids will be out of school. My oldest has just been accepted to attend school out of state and I will encourage him to never come back.

Really? It's a thing in Texas, but it varies by school district or campus. It's also a thing in Mexico and a lot of foreign countries. That's why pervy Japanese anime always has girls in school uniforms - not because Japan is all Catholic.

I said it seems like, not that it is. It's crazy though, none of my friends, family, co-workers, or acquaintances in other parts of the country have kids that wear uniforms to school. I've actually paid attention to all of them posting back to school pictures.
