I've noticed it over the years, and just in the last 3 hours I've seen 3 complains on FB from parents whose kids have been disciplined today over uniforms. South Louisiana seems to be the only place in which public school kids wear uniforms. All of the friends and family I have in other places have kids that just wear whatever to school. Has there been any measurable positives from school uniforms? It's been 20 years now and as far as I know, nothing in school has changed. I have children in private school, so I have no dog in the fight, it just seems like a socialist idea that has garnered no benefits.

Thoughts?

I went to Catholic school. We wore uniforms. I think it was a good thing, overall.

Our “uniform” rules have devolved into school spirit shirts every day. You can wear the khakis and polo but you can also wear any tshirt w school name in it.

I don’t see the point.

My kids can wear spirit shirts every Friday now. I kinda like the more lax rules for private schools. It makes it easier, also they can wear spirit shirts from previous years which wasn't the case before at one of my daughter's school. I just don't get why public schools are more stringent with their uniform rules now than private schools.

Mine doesn't wear uniforms anymore in high school but she did PK-8th grade. I hated wasting money on them. I'd rather spend money on clothes they can wear outside of school too.

I went to a public elementary school in the 90s before they had mandatory school uniforms in 1998. At my school you knew who was poor and who were flashy. With uniforms, everybody is the same where kids won’t get picked on for not having cool clothes like their classmates.

It’s actually is supposedly better for the poorer kids because all they have to buy is a few uniforms instead of being worried about keeping up with other’s new outfits all the time. I don’t mind uniforms. I think some of the enforcement at the periphery is silly though.

I get that, but you still know who is poor, and there are still bullies in school. It hasn't stopped any of it from what I've heard from parents. If anything, the bullying is worse than when we were in school.

I agree with you. In addition, it prevents the arguments in the morning when they "can't find anything to wear" or when they try to wear something you wouldn't approve of in the first place. Uniforms are awesome. I love them for my girls.

Looking back as an adult — uniforms are awesome.

Hell, I thought they were awesome in high school — it was great not having to put any thought into what I was going to wear. School polo and khaki pants / shorts — done.

You should see what some kids here in Louisiana will wear to school if there isn't a uniform policy. It would become a distraction.

When I was in public elementary school in the 90s we switched from wearing whatever to wearing uniforms. I think it is better that way.

Sometimes we have "free dress" day and even that has to have numerous guidelines because of what students have attempted to wear in the past.

This IS the exact reason our Parish went to uniforms.

I never wore uniforms in school in LA. We had poor kids, rich kids etc. I don't ever remember it being an issue at all. Most of the public schools in the country don't wear them.

I enjoyed the ease of uniforms except they didn't allow shorts. frick pants in South Louisiana summers.

Oh it WAS an issue, trust me. I dealt with it first hand. Was even on the Parish committee for defining the parameters when it was first implemented.
