A couple of years ago, I was given keys to a room, head up to the room, open it up, noone was in the room but all the person's luggage and stuff was in the room. Went down and was like uhhh someone is already using that room. They apologized and gave me a new key to the correct room.
I know in many places, the clerk makes the key right when you check in, by simply putting a blank card and typing in the room number. I'm surprised these mistakes don't happen more often.
OP, did the couple have luggage with them as if they were just checking in?

wont do that again will you? Oh and if traveling by auto, this is a good reason to be armed. OTOH, if you are traveling by air, you have my sympathy.
I'll be OCD about it from now on. And I fly with no checked luggage

They did. The weird thing is I have priority check in which means my key is waiting on me and all I do is flash an Id. I book all my rooms 3-4 weeks out as well.

Are the Irmo passes transferable?
My mother-in-law lives there and we have occasion to get a hotel room when we go visit

I was taking a shite and the maid walked in about to service the room. The bathroom door was open b/c I figured I'd be alone in the room.
Same damn thing happened to me, but it was the am and I was getting ready. She knocked as she was entering, but didn’t hear me say anything, evidently, so I just waved at her when she walked in.....she turned a bright red and skidaddled.

Yeah, but they probably don't assign your room until the morning of the day you check in though.

It was the fault of the hotel for giving my key out
It was also your fault for leaving the door unlocked.

You'd think with how smart you are, you could get a real sales job.

Happened to me before, but the front desk screwed up. Guy I work with had the same thing happen, but someone was using a ghost key. His crew came back later and tried to rob him. Luckly he carries.

I had a similar thing happen but in reverse. I checked into a Hampton Inn in Savannah for work for 3 weeks. First day back from the plant my room key doesn't work. So I go back down the the clerk and ask for a new key. They say that I was supposed to check out so I showed them my reservation was for pretty much the whole month of February. Another guy is checking in and being kinda of a dick to the front desk lady. The lady working with me says that she cant give me the room I had but has another opening. I said no big deal but asked what they did with my stuff. She says they will find out, I am a little worried because I keep my gun I travel with lock in my bag so I typically don't like people messing with my stuff. The guy that was being a dick checked in and goes upstairs. They are still trying to find my stuff, and the dick guy come downstairs ranting and raving about them giving him a room (turns out it was my room and they never moved anything) with someone stuff all in there and that he is a diamond member and blah blah blah. I tell them it is probably my room so just swap the keys, easy peesy. They guy has full on melt down talking shite to me and the women. I guess smelling like a paper mill and in work clothes the guy thought he was a big timer with his roll around laptop bag. He told me to shut up and that he was a diamond member. I busted out laughing when the desk clerk looked at him and said yea so is he (me). I got my room key and went to the room. I don't have time for assholes being rude and wasn't worth starting anything with him. I saw him the next morning when leaving because he was in the room next to me and he wouldn't look me in the eye and took the stairs to breakfast.

What a weird response to not being able to lock a door. You sound like a baby.

Always double lock my hotel door
Posted on 11/15/18 at 9:01 am to TH03
I just don’t look at that as guest already in room as being negligent.
Could they have taken one extra step? Sure
OP prob will moving forward.
