I am looking for a place to retire (still a long way away) where I don't have to evacuate for hurricanes, but not too far from the city, and where I can get a little nature off my my back porch.

There is nothing safe. Take Katrina and put her 30-40 miles east, you never know mother nature's limits.

check out money hill for a little bit of a price jump. well worth it.

There is no place in South Louisiana that you won’t have the potential to evacuate for a hurricane.

Pretty sure Bedico Creek will flood in a big hurricane. I seem to recall it almost flooded in august 2106.

Nice neighborhood but it’s not what it sounds like you’re looking for. It’s building up like crazy with houses very close to each other and the nature aspect is gone. I agree with the previous poster to go north a bit towards AbitaSprings and if the budget allows, look in money hill. Lots of retired folks in there and it’s really nice.

I've got a family member whose house backs up to the woods which is nice. It's a massive subdivision and very family friendly. The prices are pretty damn high for how close they are to each other. HOA fees are high too. But make no mistake, it is really nice.

No clue about flooding but there are a significant # of good looking broads.

Just purchased a house there in the section with bigger lots. It’s a real nice subdivision that is family friendly and always has things going on. It hasn’t flooded yet so with the past 2 big floods I don’t see it happening soon. You can’t beat the area and quality of people

Nice neighborhood. Its very big. Flooding shouldnt be an issue. They will advertise a bunch of nature crap, but theyve already mowed down half of it for more houses.

My biggest issue is there is only one entrance/exit and Ive almost smoked a couple people because they dont look.

They did have an issue way back when the entrance would flood over and everyone was stuck in there. I kind of laughed, get a 4wd and you can get out if it happens again although I think they fixed that particular drainage issue.

Money Hill is better, but there really isnt anything around it. Could be good or bad.

I love the area it is home to me. Family in Madisonville and Bedico and I live 3 miles east of Ponchatoula. All that being said If you want to be a safe distance from Hurricanes Bedico isn't it. Different models have said that a cat 3 or even a slow 2 will put feet of water on the northshore all along Hwy 22 doesn't really matter where you are. If you are south of I-12 you are not safe from flooding. Depending on the storm they have called for evacuations south of I-12 and normally always south of Hwy 22. If you want nature in your backyard but still be close to the city I would go above I-12. Loranger, Husser,Folsom are not too crowded and won't flood as long as you don't buy anything that is low. Go find you a couple of acres on a hill and build what you want.

yep them people are living on borrowed time. It will happen and the more the area builds up the faster that day will come.

Don't kid yourself. Every additional acre of cleared land raises the flood potential.

Another thing is that most of them people moving in there do not realize actually how close they are to the swamp and lake.

We live there now and will be building a bigger house/forever home in another section of the neighborhood in the next couple years. We love it there. We have young children and there is so much for them to do there- pools, nature trails, etc. They also have lots of events for the kids- Mardi Gras parade and after party, Christmas event, Summer event, Easter event, etc. We’re from Slidell, lived in BR after college and Madisonville has by far been the best place to live especially raising a family. You’re just far enough out to feel a hint of country living but not too far away from stores, restaurants, etc. There are parts of the neighborhood with houses close together but that’s in the back of the neighborhood and it’s a huge neighborhood so you can be far away from that on a bigger lot up front if you choose.
