It's called dark matter because we have no idea. It's not observable therefore we don't really have any definitive information. All we know is that it is likely the most abundant matter in the universe due to the symmetrical orbit of galaxies. This should not be possible by the traditional model of physics
Eta: there is more to it than this, but this is one of the first observations that used the term dark matter as an explanation. What is dark energy is an even more complex question

It's actually unfortunately as simple as it sounds: it is and always was.
The alternative (or primary. I don't mean to make it any less valid. Heck, I believe it myself) is that some, a, or The God is and always was and decided to create it from which point on, it was no longer created or destroyed.
The theist and atheist versions of how the universe may have began can be explained quite similarly.

Matter can be created or destroyed. Happens all the time. That's what Einstein's E=mc2 is all about - it describes how much energy is equivalent to how much mass.

This is sorta my thoughts on it.
Any time the megadorks can't get their crazy math to lineup they blame the difference on dark matter. It's basically this all-encompassing title for the shite we can't compute. No one really knows what it is, what it's made of, or when it came into existence.

So, scientists claim that this dark matter cannot be observed, but it has a force and influences things, so it must exist.
One may say that these scientists have faith that the dark matter exists...
