I know what it means, but it really irks me when people say this. What is so much different than saying 4:45? It has the exact number of syllables so you're not saving time. Makes me think they are just trying to be a pretentious douche.
Wow. A gas tank can be 3/4 full or have a quarter of a tank missing. Who gives a frick which way it's expressed?

If only the UK had institutions designed for students to learn things they don't already know. I wonder what they would call such an institution?

Before the advent of digital clocks, and watches, we felt the same way about people who said 4:45. Not kidding either.

A lot of kids can't make change either. It's sad how dumbed down the last two generations have been.

When most of these children's parents migrated from third world countries and whose culture is stuck in the middle ages how can you express surprise?

None of this is surprising. Kids can't do basic math either. Without that, how could they ever decipher a clock?

No, I am still teaching. I now teach at a fully online school (not in ebr). My students live in the state (some out of state), but I seldom ever see them. We have half of the bs paperwork, 1/5 of the stupid meetings, and nearly no discipline issues (which only occur during live internet classes). I teach, grade their work, make calls/send messages, compile data, and make more money.

It isn't a bad gig.

Is it?

I mean I can read an analog clock, but in this day and age who gives a shite if someone can’t? It’s literally a useless skill.

It is a useless skill to look at a clock and be able to read it? Seriously?

Yes. We have cell phones and countless other technologies that do that for us now.

If someone can’t read an analog clock, how would that negatively affect them in any aspect of life?

If someone tells me they don’t know how to read a clock I am going to assume they have some kind of disability.

It’s an altimeter. Very useful instrument for pilots.

I think the problem is, as EA6B pointed out is that there are still analogue clocks all over the place, as well as a ton of other instruments and gauges that are read in a similar way. We’re not exactly talking about an abacus here.

And it’s not like this is a particularly difficult thing to learn.

I just quizzed my 15 year old son and he got it right but he did say a lot of kids at his school don't know how to read one.

My son isn't what you would call a "scholar" either so I am in no way shape or form saying he is smarter than the other kids. I was actually surprised he got it right.
