So, when you tell them that this particular valve opens when turned clockwise, what are they going to do?

You should see current BCT trainees trying to figure out how to tie a tie for their first ASU inspection without their cellphones and YouTube to help them.
They demonstrated for us ONCE (for those who didn’t already know how to do it) the proper way to tie a Windsor (you know how it is...taking a piss properly is taught by the numbers).
I don’t think anybody in my platoon got it wrong.

I was in line to checkout at a local store when the girl behind the counter turns and asks her coworker what time it was. Her coworker stops, looks at her oversized watch and holler's back, "It's ten minutes to three thirty!" The look on the woman's face in front of me was priceless. I just shook my head knowing this was probably the best job that checkout girl could ever have.

Some!? How about most. I am a high school teacher and I would say only about 10% of the kids know how to read the clocks. It is crazy. They probably learn it at some point when they are much younger but then they never use the knowledge so it just fades away. Not sure it is their fault or anyone's fault, really. There is just no need for them to ever use that in this day and age. Everyone glances at their cell phone or smart watch. The kids who need those skills at some point later in life will pick them up. I am not worried about having a society of idiots who can't turn a valve clockwise. They aren't all idiots, they just don't use those skills at all.
