Some in the state legislature want to move UNO back to the LSU system

Long article, cliff's notes:
UNO moved out of the LSU system into the UL system over a decade ago. Big reason for this is because UNO felt they were getting short shrift from LSU, and they would be better off "with equals" in the UL system.
UNO has a ton of problems. Enrollment has fallen off a cliff, which, along with mismanagement, has led to financial issues.
Moving back to the LSU system might save them a bit of money due to consoliodation of services with the system... but it won't fix the real issues at UNO. As a proud grad, I see several major issues with UNO right now.
1) The fact that almost every college eligible LA high school senior can get TOPS, plus this social-media fueled idea that college is about an experience, means kids want to go away to college, and to a college that has an actual on-campus life. UNO, as a commuter school, has almost no on-campus life to speak of. Having TOPS pay for tuition means what money their families can scrape together can be used for room and board.
2) UNO used to get a lot of students who were barely ready for college, and certainly could not handle going away to college. By and large, these kids are now going to Delgado. While that is good for the debt loads of these students, and for the state as a whole, the improvement of Delgado is costing UNO.
3) UNO used to also have a large population of non-traditional students who worked during day and went to college "at night" part time. With the rise in online learning, these students now have many other options, both without leaving home, and also with being able to do an online / "learn as you want" schedule.
I honestly don't know how you can solve any of these issues. I think the only way UNO can survive long term is to completely change their focus. But you already have Southeastern and Nicholls not far away, who they would be competing against if they change their focus.
It is crazy to thihk the largest city in the state would not have a public 4 year college. But... LA has too many colleges. The misison of UNO is lost, and the state does not need another Southeastern.

UNO should have the students pay for a football team

they probably just need to close both UNO and Southern UNO

Doubt Landry has the balls to close SUNO, the worst 4 year school in the state (SU-Shreve too). Worthless schools that drain this poor state’s resources when UNo and LSUS are right there.

Jindal tried this and holy cow the cries of racism were insane. It went nowhere.
Plan was to merge UNO and SUNO onto UNO campus and give SUNO campus to Delgado which would allow Delgado to become more of a junior college as opposed to a community college.
The only thing SUNO does "well" is their college of education. And by "well" i mean actually graduate people. Now, their graduates become horrible school teachers and school admins. But at least they are graduating, I guess. A garbage degree.

UNO and SUNO should be turned into an information technology institute and focus on building the IT workforce and companies in Louisiana.
Louisiana Institute of Information Technology or New Orleans Institute of Information Technology
Louisiana Institute of Information Technology or New Orleans Institute of Information Technology

I attended the UNO Mini-College when I was 12. Took a drama class and a creative writing class. That's all I got.

uno should close
It actually has grad programs in engineering, stem etc.
Is at worst #4 academicly in state.
LSU
Tech, ull, and uno in any order.
It's in the states biggest city.
Makes way more sense to close any HBCU over UNO.

It seemed at least in the 80s and 90s they did everything they could to chase these types of students out of UNO. In many cases these students were the kids who worked for their family businesses in the New Orleans area.

Nah, go with Southern Hall of Information Technology

After they were enrolled for a year...

Just give UNO to Ben Franklin.

Give UNO to Louisiana Tech and let them make it a satellite campus focused on engineering/STEM fields
LA Tech - NO
LA Tech - NO

This. The state will never do it, but we need to close some universities.

This seems like a good idea.
The best thing about UNO is their engineering program and I hear Tech is very solid too.
I think the only engineering schools in Louisiana are LSU, UNO, Tech, ULL, and Tulane (and Tulane students have to take classes at UNO).

Back in the day UNO was for kids who enjoyed the LSU party atmosphere too much and had to go back home where their parents could keep tabs on them.
