Software update allows TESLA cars to drive themselves starting tomorrow

The update will roll out gradually over the next five days, automatically applying itself to all Model X SUVs and all Model S sedans produced since October of last year. These sorts of updates, while largely a curiosity among the auto industry as a whole, have become commonplace for Tesla owners. Still, this is the biggest update by far, taking the first big step toward the eagerly anticipated Autopilot mode.
The main new feature is called Autosteer, which is basically an advanced lane departure assist system. The car will automatically stay in lane, slowing down as necessary to avoid traffic and steering around curves. The vehicle will even change lanes, though only when prompted by the driver hitting the turn signal -- and only when the car detects the way is clear.

Hopefully it works as advertised but I fear the lawsuits will be epic when done dumb arse thinks he can sleep while the car drives itself.

I guess that is just Tesla protecting itself from future lawsuits.

My wife just got a Tahoe with Lane Keep Assist. It basically steers the car to make it stay in the lane. It has a camera in the windshield that can read the lines and if the car drifts without a turn signal it will steer itself back to the center.
It is cool technology but if you change lanes without using a turn signal you have to fight through the system trying to steer you back into your lane.

Good, people are supposed to use their turn signals when changing lanes.

I agree, you can turn the feature off but I leave it on because my wife apparently never learned where the blinker lever was located in driver's ed. This a good teacher for her!!

well, there have been incidents, but the other driver (human error) has always been at fault.

In the long run, the cost of the lawsuits will be much less than insurance companies have to pay out yearly for repairs and suits.
