Yes, I actually do think about my vacations out of the country more than I do a crawfish boil. I'm not expecting anybody to be jealous of my memories or care about them. Doesn't change the fact that they are more fun than a 4 hour crawfish boil in Bossier City.

Well this is why
Baton Rouge > bossier

In a bartering system which is what we would be in with a total collapse silver will have value.
Bartering only works when you have something people value. Why would you value silver when people are scraping by to get food and water?
Silver wouldn't have value until society starts to rebuild itself.

Eh, silver and gold have always had value. Even at times of societal collapse

Young people have always prioritized experiences and having fun over saving money for the future.
The same people older crowd shaking their head at Gen Z emptying their bank accounts for Taylor Swift tickets or an instagram vacation were pissing their money away on drugs, booze, concerts and roadtrips back in the days of Woodstock, Aerosmith, Kiss, Disco fever, Daytona Beach, etc, etc...
And these young kids today will be pinching pennies, maximizing tax advantaged retirement plans and complaining about Democrats and knee pain to their neighbor before heading off to Home Depot 40 years from now.
Life is a cycle...that always repeats.

I see the exact opposite...more people posting daily about their big houses and fancy cars and boats, just to show they are keeping up with the Joneses. For most people travel is a way to see the world and have fun with friends and family. I doubt most people who travel to the Carribean actually want to live there.
Usually they do so to get validation from other people who think their stuff is great because, they value it less than the positive reinforcement they get from social media.
If they were truly happy with their stuff and life, they would not be posting their stuff.

That is not why. Friends and family and the crawfish is what makes a crawfish boil fun, not necessarily the location. Baton Rouge > Bossier for sure, I agree. But Tulum, Jamaica, Ireland, Puerta Villarta, Peru, etc are better than a Baton Rouge crawfish boil that you can do all the time. It's insane to think otherwise.
If it's a "whatever floats your boat" situation then sure, I get it. Traveling is not for everyone. But a "I can confirm that a crawfish boil is better than a trip to Europe or South America" sounds like someone that has probably just went on a Disney cruise to Cancun one time.

I agree. As a manager/boss I had zero problem granting PTO as long as the work got done.

Well, y’all are wrong.

And your age cohort has been saying that for 50 years.

While you’re in a stinky airport with strangers getting molested by a tsa popeyes employee I’ll be in my back yard drinking a beer and stirring a pot surrounded by friends
And when I get tired of it? I’ll just walk back inside
Oh and I’ll save money too, which is the point of this thread
ETA: it’ll hopefully all collapse in our lifetimes so the saving won’t matter, but boiling crawfish prepares me better to survive than your trips to Disney world

401ks and traditional IRAs are already taxed higher than any other investment vehicle. You will be ok.
I am aware of taxation rates. I am talking about a full on, Greece style forfeiture of funds.

We are all on 1 of 2 paths, either you will:
- Not adequately save for you nonproductive years, and you will be a burden to your children and/or other family members.
`OR`
- You will adequately save for your nonproductive years, only to be targeted by family that didn't save.
It looks like a lot of the YOLO people around here don't care if they ruin the lives of others.

My opinion is to try and strike a balance during your working years.I’ve known too many people that worked like Trojans, pinched pennies with the idea they were going to do all sorts of things,go all sorts of places, finally enjoy life when they retire.
Then shortly before retiring or shortly after they died or got some awful disease.
I wish I had traveled more when the wife and I were younger, there are lots of places I would have liked to see, mostly just in the USA.
Now that I am older it kinda just seems to be too much trouble to travel.Have to board the dog which would probably break her heart not knowing what was going on.
Last few years when I did fly somewhere it sucked balls.I remember when flying was pleasant, people weren’t packed like sardines and were more considerate.
We’re pretty well fixed financially so we’ll never be a burden on the kids so that’s something.

When I was 22 someone told me put away in retirement my age (in thousands) every year. Have fun with the rest. Not a bad strategy.

Do you get your description of an airport from a sitcom or something?

Yea, I do the same thing, numerous times a year.

I'll save money too, just not as much as I could because I like to go do fun stuff that most people don't do.

You got Disney World from this?...

You couldn't pay me to go to Disney. If I take trips in the states it's to National Parks or beaches or festivals in other states. Only place we've been that I have no desire to go back was Las Vegas. Went there last month and it sucked. Probably would be fine not going back to Canada as well.

32, and literally all my life I've been told that social security would run out well before I was old enough to benefit from it. There are no millennials who were ever expecting to see a dime, let alone counting on it.
People have been saying SS would run out since the program started.

All those places you mentioned are tourist traps where tourism is their whole economy
Like before the tourists came, their people were starving
ETA: which makes them basically Disney

It's just clear your arse has never been anywhere and will never go anywhere. But you're right, a couple hour crawfish boil that we've all done 100 times in Baton Rouge is better than a pub crawl in Dublin or going to Machu Picchu in Peru
