Social media makes folks lose perspective and become too despondent.

In 1968 we had the Vietnam War ongoing including the Tet Offensive.

A flu pandemic that killed over 100,000 Americans.

Civil rights protests and War protests.

The assassinations of RFK and MLK. With riots following the MLK death that took over 40 lives.

France got the bomb.

The bad guys invaded Czechoslovakia,

60 minutes began airing.....

And somehow life went on and we are still here today.

I think a big part of what we're seeing is the lack of sex a lot of people have had during the quarantine.

Sounds like 1968 was just as shitty as 2020 and they didn't even have social media.

Social media is becoming a scourge. Thought diversity is at an all-time low. There are less real conversations, just online transactions of virtual currency (upvotes, likes, retweets).

Congrats Big Tech - you've enslaved us all.

It was but outside of special reports the news was on for a half hour and only when you were in front of the tv. It permeates now and the competition makes the media stress the worst case scenario more and more to keep you connected.

When does the Unabomber's Manifesto become required reading for the OT/PT?

Edit to add: I am in no way advocating violence, bombing, or anything else he said/did with that post, just pointing out that a lot of what he was against was technology and whatnot.

Carefully craft your social media echo chamber, only allowing articles and data that support your narrative.

Visit said echo chamber on a daily basis for years and continue to inject that confirmation bias into your veins.

Eventually, you will have convinced yourself there is no longer a debate. You KNOW you're right and anyone who disagrees with you is not just wrong, but evil.

Then strike a match:

Aldous Huxley was more prescient than Orwell. Orwell said the truth would be kept from us. Huxley said there will be so much noise you won't be able to find the truth.

24 hour cable news isn't so great either. During the 60s many people would read the morning paper and watch maybe an hour long news program at the end of the day. There are millions of people sitting around watching hour after hour after hour of riot coverage today.

Absolutely. There's a reason why Portnoy and Rogan have been seeing massive gains. People are tired of the constant bullshite divisive groupthink with cable news.

If only COVID-19 had been as bad as predicted. That might have woken a few people up.

Oh, what could have been.
