Social Media killed the Comedy Star (Regarding the "joke police" in today's society)

I've been trying to write this post for a few days now so I'm just going to sum it up because I don't have time to type everything I want to.
With the rise of social media giving everybody and their grandma (literally) a "voice" and a place to post thoughts and feelings on any topic, at any time, for the entire world to see, a unfortunate casualty has been, and is going to be the death of comedy.
I've been watching this digression that started before the #metoo movement, but has accelerated intensely since then.
With Roseanne, James Gunn, Elon Musk, and most recently what triggered it was a season finale from the AMC show Preacher that Seth Rogen writes that had an actual Nazi coming to save Hitler (who escaped Hell) wearing a MAGA hat (an obvious, bad joke that references the media and celebs calling Trump Hitlter) and watching the social media comments of people "quitting watching" the show and comments like:
"keep your politics to yourself"
"I will never support you again, Seth"
"The left controls the media, I'm 'boycotting' amc"
etc.
This is a show that has literally Jesus as an inbred simpleton, God in a fetish dog suit riding around a Harley with various biker trash women and a junkie vampire that uses an umbrella to avoid the sun
It was a dumb joke, and so was Roseanne's, and believe it or not, James Gunn's terrible, unfunny, and inappropriate jokes.
Fox news ran the story about Preacher as actual news (basically the equivalent of a dick joke, and it made the front page of FOX) and the comments are just rediculous
SJWs get offended from everything under the sun. But now, both sides are "offended" from everything. Comedy is no longer taken at surface level and all jokes are now scrutinized because everyone now has a platform and are vying for clicks and likes.
A lot of the time, I don't even think people are actually offended, they are just spewing crap on social media for attention. But this is only going to get worse until telling bad jokes is going to evolve into an actual crime.
It's sad, but it's a definite negative side effect of social media. Back in the day if you told a bad joke (dead baby, "racist", etc) and it fell flat, you just felt dumb for not getting laughs and moved on. Even people that used to actually get offended, would just say something like "that's offensive to me" and move on.
Now everything is a "movement" and a white knighting shite fest. Everyone is trying to seem self-important or narcissistic to a detrimental level.
Everyone is posturing for some non-existent platform or stance and comedy is dying a slow death.
Dave Chappelle has hit on this, and a great youtuber named idubbbz, and they are both right.
PBS Video and article on Chappelle and this topic
idubbbz TV calls out the "joke police"
Comedy is endangered, and we need to all chill out and laugh at stuff. Laughter is important and so is comedy. I'm scared of what this road is going to lead to, and something needs to change, or in 5-10 years we are going to be a lifeless, boring, and tortured society.
/end rant

A few people having the platform to voice their sensitivity about everything has lead to nothing being ok anymore. This combined with letting someone’s sexual kink be the basis for legal life and there you have it

Seth Rogan caused a scene in front of politician's family purely because he was a Republican. He refused to take a picture with his kids and then insulted their father in front of them.
He's scum of the Earth.

Comedians needs to stop placating to the easily offended and just tell them frick off.
That is more the problem than social media.
The more attention you give their voices, the more power they have.

It's likely this will cycle back around and at some point the race to victim status will lack the power society currently grants it. There will be a tipping point, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Anybody who follows Bill Burr is well aware of this. What I like about him is that he doesn't give a shite and still tells the same jokes, and calls out people who get so offended.

The Right were the original SJWs with "zomg think of the children" then the left started doing it far more effectively, and now we have pure tribalism. If my side said it, it must be good.

No they don't.
The outrage only lasts for a blink of an eye. People move on to the next outrage.
James Gunn will be making blockbuster movies again very soon and no one will care.

Go watch Bill Burr's appearance on Colbert. It was like watching comedy die before your very eyes during the interview.

I'm usually don't give a shite about what people joke about, but some of those James Gunn Tweets were pretty fricking bizarre......

Talk about an overreaction.
Comedians used to not be such little pussies. It goes both ways.

Colbert was better when he subtly made fun of conservatives. He’s gone full retard like Kimmel.

You may want to look up Tipper Gore.
"Gore rose to prominence for her work with the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), voicing strong opinions and advocating the labeling of record covers of releases featuring profane language, especially in the heavy metal, punk and hip hop genres."

This might be an aside to the point you are trying to make, but I feel like comedy has also become very diluted, much as the music industry has been diluted, with a lot of noise due to social media and due to the fact that everyone now has the ability to have a public platform. So while there are really good musicians and comedians out there, there are also a lot of bad musicians and bad comedians who are very good at being loud and garnering attention for the wrong reasons. So I think that in that way too, social media has had a two-sided effect on comedy and music; in one sense, it's great, because we are able to find niche artists we might not have been exposed to in the pre-social media era, but in another sense, everything seems watered down and people who don't have time to search aren't being exposed to a lot of really high-quality material. For me, the podcast world has exposed me to a lot of great comedy, and I think a lot of the improv world that used to make its way to SNL has now found a niche in the podcast/streaming services world, and likewise, lot of great artists have made their way to music streaming platforms like Spotify. Just another observation about social media's impact on comedy, albeit not really relevant to your original point.
