Every once in a while, the Algorithm serves up one of those "no sh!t" stories, and today was the day that I learned that back in 1910, we came thisclose to being the home of all things hippopotamus.

YouTube food-blogger Arseny Knaifel -- a-k-a "My Name Is Andong" -- posted a fun story about how a Louisiana representative Robert F. "Bubba" Broussard (OK, I made up his nickname) proposed introducing hippos to the swamps of south Louisiana. Says Andong

The Smithsonian seems to think that "ya man, it's true": LINK

quote:

The only one way to solve both problems at once, argued Louisiana Representative Robert F. Broussard, was to embrace hippopotamus ranching. On March 24, 1910, Broussard stood before the House Committee on Agriculture to lay out the details of his “American Hippo Bill” (House Resolution 23261).

If people won't embrace nutria widespread as a food source, they's aint gonna be eatin' "swamp bacon" either.

The article says that they would lose weight on a water hyacinth diet.

Hippos, like almost all “herbivore” mammals, will absolutely eat meat from time to time.

Before Pablo Escobar met his untimely demise, he had estates all over Colombia (probably the world). At one home he had a private zoo, which included a few hippos in the local river.

Twenty years or so after his death, the hippo population had exploded to the point where it was unsafe for locals to travel the river.

Hippos are apparently very territorial.
