No beer. Do not bring alcohol either.
Most stuff has been addressed but be ready for very bad traffic. Hwy 66 is currently closed due to erosion from the rains. There is a detour that will take you down a very narrow back road. It will be a nightmare so leave early and be patient.

Hot as frick but worth the drive if you've never been. I enjoy talking to the lifers through the fence and asking them what crime they committed and hearing their side of the story. Can be pretty eye opening experience.

I know two people in Angola. One is a white dude who is a year older than I.. Went to school with him, he dropped out. He ended up killing someone and hiding their body in the woods.
The other people is a black dude. When I worked for a parish government at that said parish courthouse this guy was a student worker. We actually ended up keeping him beyond the student worker program because it was just me & the building inspector in the office and he was a good worker. Nice guy, he had recently graduated from Redemptorist and was in his first year at Southern.
One day I went into work. Our office opened up 1.5 hrs earlier than the others so inspections could start early. I arrived to work and was a few minutes earlier than usual. I would go talk to the guy who was the parish president's right hand man because he would get to work really early. I was going into his office and before I even got in he says "did you hear about _______?" I didn't so I told him no. He said "he shot _________ last night". I thought he was joking because he would joke around about some sick shite.. Anyway, come to find out. There were some guys who lived by him, who kept fricking with him.
He had come into work with cuts and scratches a few times. He told us his cousin got a new motorbike and he was learning to ride it. Come to find out, he was hiding getting jumped. Well that last time he got jumped, he went inside, got a gun and shot the main dude he was always messing with him. We found an application for a gun permit in his desk, but evidently he felt he needed protection right away. Since he went inside and came back out, premeditated murder. He ended up getting life.. Just like that. Sad situation... but I am pretty sure there are more whites there than you think.

I've been maybe 6 or 7 times. Last two times was with a buddy whose bro is best buds with an important person. From the gate, we drove past the CO's houses, and went straight to the guest house or whatever it is. Catered, free drinks, watching football, air conditioning. We got on a bus and went around and bought shite before going to the actual rodeo. Sat in bucket seats with fans above our heads, and trustees would bring food and cokes.
After the rodeo, we took the bus back to the guest house and got to skip past all of the poors sitting in traffic waiting to leave the gate.
Will never sit in the bleachers again. It sucks compared to the other option

They will check your car for contraband, so don't pack anything remotely illegal. Even sex toys. Long story there but it was embarrassing.

I have thought about going to this for the few years, but I've been scared away by what I hear about the traffic. Is it really that bad?

Make sure your AC works and you pee before leaving. Otherwise, take a nap when it's over and wait for the place to clear out. We did that one year

All depends on how soon after the rodeo you want to leave. It's not THAT many people if you are comparing it to an LSU game, the main issue is that there is only 1 road in and out. At the end of that several mile stretch is a stop sign that everyone pauses to turn onto the main highway.
Just stick around and walk through hobby crafts for 45 min or so after the rodeo ends.
