There was so much news that the Black Death was coming and fear and uncertainty gripped everyone. People wanted to feel like we had some sense of control so we let our governments mandate draconian measures. When we found out his wasn’t the Black Death, Pandora has already been let out of the box. There was political opportunity to use the pandemic against the sitting president, and to signal to constituents that you had them in mind, either for their health or their freedom depending on the state.

COVID isn’t a hoax though, it’s killed millions and millions of people. The sad truth is, there was probably nothing we could have done to prevent that. The masks and social distancing just were never going to be useful long term for anything other than letting people feel a false sense of control

When the Imperial Model was originally released, there was genuine concern but that quickly went away when it became obvious to just about everyone that Covid-19 did not carry with it a 2% mortality rate. The real mortality rate was somewhere around 0.5-0.6%. That being said, it took us until about late-April to realize this. By that time, we were well into campaign season and it became obvious to Democrats that they could use the pandemic to their advantage. With the media on their side, they pressured state governors to continue the lockdowns and harsh restrictions.
