That's not really a concern.

FYI I heard on a local talk radio station in Lafayette a story about a set of twins who completed the test kit and they got totally different results. How can that happen? I’m assuming that it’s not super accurate and wouldn’t put much stock in any results.

I'm honestly amazed that people are doing this. Is it mainly fueled by people's obsession with ethnicity?
I have family that Im not technically related to and I see this stuff as an unfortunate wedge.

It's funny that this place clowns the Q thread, yet the moment you talk about 23andMe or an Amazon Echo, the tin foil hats come out in full force.

I was just curious because my dad was adopted so that side was a mystery.

I was disappointed in the results, in that the information is so generic.

I did it last year and found the who'll thing to be pretty interesting. I didn't submit to find my long lost relatives or anything like that...also submitted under a fake name.
At any rate, I think that if the government wants your DNA data, they can pretty oeasily collect it and catalog at birth.

Congrats on your DNA being in the Govt database, and for being 1/25th Gibraltan and 1/45th Sicilian

If the government wants your DNA then the government will get it. If a life insurance company wants your DNA then the life insurance company will get it. End of conversation.
Take the test and have fun with it.

Anyway, the one I heard about (might have been triplets, not twins) turned out to have used different companies for the testing. 23andMe, ancestry.com, and family tree dna have their own interpretations of the data and they are definitely NOT the same. Over a number of years I tested with all 3 for genealogical reasons and know first hand that's the case.

What company? With 23andMe you just pay for the kit.

Sure, there are privacy concerns but are they any more serious than applying for a loan or getting your driver's licence? They sell the data but the data is done so on an anonymous basis.
The other side of this is that DNA is where medicine is heading. In the next 15-20 years, I would be shocked if DNA isn't collected and stored at birth. DNA is literally the code to your being. The more science learns about DNA indicators and disease, the quicker they'll find cures via DNA manipulation and targeted pro-active medications.
I guess it's just a matter of your own tolerance for invasion of privacy. If I know I can live 10 years longer by getting my DNA tested in exchange for my data being anonymously sold, I'm taking the 10 extra years of life every time.

Get married, have kids, apply for life insurance and get told to frick yourself because your DNA.
They already look at your medical records, that tells them what has occurred in the past. If the insurance company can look at your future, and you have a gene that makes you more predisposed to heart disease or this or that, you are fricked.
They aren't doing it yet, but they will be.
The thing is... and this is very important.... right now the insurance company can't compel you to give a dna sample.... and they certainly don't want to spend their own money to process and analyze every sample from every application...
But once you have given it out consensually and another company has already processed and analyzed it... all the insurance company has to do is pay a fee for instant results of your dna...
These dna companies are sitting on trillions of dollars of information.
HIPPA needs to be updated. For many reasons, but especially this.
My parents already took tests, I know where my lineage goes.
I see absolutely no upside to this, unless I go to my doctor's office and he/she wants to do a dna test for screening for diseases I need to stay on top of. That's protected by HIPPA. And I already have my life insurance squared away.
