problem is, if you've waited this long, fuel will be an issue, probably gone from about Jupiter on down, and once you get north of there there's a whole lot of nothing for a long time, and getting fuel anywhere will be sketchy

Its easy for us to sit here far away from where people are told to evacuate and say "why don't you just leave?" Well there are a lot of factors why. I've heard that governor say over and over "you can buy more stuff." Really? Can you buy again everything you've accumulated over a lifetime? How about you pony up for me guvna?

Just sayin' if I was down there I wouldn't necessarily listen to a political blowhard's advice. I'm capable of making my own decisions.

Guy I know very casually was telling me his sister in Miami told him she was going to 'ride it out'.

Any of these clowns see that old PSA about the "hurricane-proof" home that was wiped out during Camille?

Uh...

They should take a look at the 5 pm NHC forecast and discussion. Then, get in their car and drive North until morning.

true, and having lived in down there for about 20 years, and having gone through numerous hurricanes, and having a good bit of meteorological experience, I was pretty good at knowing when it was time to go, the thing that everyone seems to be overlooking is the few days/weeks after the storm passes, it's fricking miserable, better to get out early, let it pass, then come back when things are mostly back up and running

That's it right there...if you were getting out you should be out by now. The state has been shut down all week giving you plenty of opportunity to go. Now is not the time to go with all the idiots cramming onto the freeways.

Not true. The weaker ones can be kind of fun to ride out honestly

Praying that hopefully a funeral won't be on your schedule in the near future.

Most people who say they've dealt with hurricanes have never actually dealt with a hurricane. They may have stayed home a few times while the center made landfall 50 miles away and you had 50 mph winds. But if you've ever been in the eyewall of a hurricane (an example of one is if you stayed in Rockport during Harvey) you'll never stay for another hurricane.

Yall need to then calmly ask them for their life insurance policy information...that way yall will have it when it comes time to plan their funerals.

She's dumb, but the traffic here in Birmingham the last few days, particularly on I65, from all the evacuees heading north has taken at least 5 years off my lifespan. It's been awful.
I hope your friend is okay, but I am grateful for any less amount of people on the roads as possible.

Quick update:

They went to a shelter in Key West. LEOs showed up and told everyone there that they had to leave, essentially forced them all to evacuate Key West.

Darwin Award seems to have been avoided.

sounds so stupid im halfway glad she didnt evac. I drove from AL to coastal NC Early Friday morning. that 50 mile stretch of 95 north was the worst in the entire 600 mile trip because of Floridian fricks.

Well, your friend is going to learn the hard way. I'm sorry to say that, but if she can't see the present danger a storm of this size and strength brings, then she is on her own.
