re: So my future daughter-in-law took a job teaching kindergarten in a NOLA charter school.

I know a handful of teachers who are in the BR/NOLA Charter school environment. It's honestly a mix bag when it comes to each grade. It's definitely not an environment that I would want to deal with. But your DIL's experience so far is probably on the extreme side.

Not just NOLA dude, the stuff my wife tells me about work ( she is a para) at their school in a nice area is unreal. You can't tell a kid, or a parent no anymore. It's horrible.

Yup, it's a school so you'll see a wide spectrum. Most parents decent but many struggling to keep up. Some come with mental health or drug issues. How much of that she sees will change year to year with who is in her class

The overbearing helicopter parents are probably just as worrisome on a selfish level as they have the means and motivation to make your life hell, whereas the drug addict probably only shows up angry when they get called in and have to bring the child home.

This thread would be labeled racist by the liberals.

It's because the parents don't give a shite and don't put a value on education. Why should they though? Have a kid, drop out, get a check. It will be an endless cycle until the black community actually starts giving a shite about their children and their education.
Yep. The biggest misnomer crock of shite is Black Lives Matter. No they don't.
Black lives only seem to matter after they're dead. The black community, by and large, has lost the value for life. Hardly anyone in that community gives a crap if a kid drops out, starts cursing at a really young age, stays out till all hours of the night, does/deals drugs, and so on.
Until the black community begins to curb its own behavioral issues, it's only going to get worse.

Major props to your future DIL for coming here to try and make a difference. Some of those charter schools seem to be good places and are doing good things, but there are far too many that seem to have a lot of people like you described.
On another note, I was at a school function the other night at a private girls high school and this one black mom was playing on her phone the whole time one of the teachers was talking. Near the end, the teacher made a point that she's going to expect the students to be critical thinkers and not just doing memorization of definitions, etc. That triggered the mom and she raised her hand to point out that some students just didn't know how to be critical thinkers and she would expect the teachers to "help" them. I thought that was pretty crappy to short change her daughter like that with her sitting right there. We are talking about 15 and 16 year old students here, not 5th graders.

We need to go back to the Orphanage system. There is no way these kids are better off than they'd been in a group home with structure and discipline. Not to mention nutritious meals, actual help with school work, nobody being shot in their presence, and most importantly, people who actually give a shite about them. I'd rather my tax dollars go towards that than what it goes to now all day, every day.
My wife is also a teacher in a public elementary and I hear a lot of the same stories. It's saddening and frustrating because no matter what they do for these kids, they're stuck in an endless cycle.

My sister has been teaching 3rd grade at a Nola charter school for about 5 years now and I think she's reached her tipping point.
She's won teacher of the year at the school a number of times, and she gets rewarded by having all of the worst kids thrown in her class. These kids are full blown special Ed but get moved through the school every year.
It's sad listening to how the parents treat these kids. She's seen severe physical abuse at school (reported it to CPS). Some kids go home kicking and screaming because they don't want to go back to their home life. Kids routinely come back to school after holidays malnourished because they rely on school to feed their kids.
And as others have said, they can't so much as tap a kid on the shoulder without putting their job in jeopardy. The kids know this too.
I don't know how she deals with it. She said she'll be moving on soon. She started very gung ho, but I think the nature of these families have zapped it all out of her.

Are we really going there with this thread?

OF course they are... you aren't new to the OT

Oh that's right. It whitey's fault.
All we need to do is pump more money into these "schools".

She is from California, and graduated from Alabama. She has a good heart and means well, but has ZERO idea how things work in the hood.
One kid has been having major behavioral problems. Cursing (lots of F words) and flipping off teachers, telling them frick you, etc. Mother gets called in for the purpose of telling her the kid has to go and can't return until he gets some intervention of some sort. Mother storms into the cafeteria screaming at everybody, cussing, getting into peoples faces, making a huge scene. My future DIL was speechless.
I do respect the job some charters are doing trying to work through the lack of family/parental support that some of these kids have. But holy shite. This does not bode well for civilization.
I teach in Tangipahoa Parish so I see my fair share of crap like this. I know a teacher who used to teach in Bogalusa city schools and she had three AA kindergartners having a threesome on her bean bag chair. Parents now days are worthless and ignorant! Not to mention, many of these AA parents want their kids to be stupid because they will get a "stupid check" from the government. This ruins their kid's life because they will be labeled special ed their whole school career.

The biggest problem is that they don't immediately eject kids/parents like this so they don't screw up the school for everyone else.

Still no pics of all these teachers.

That is a good question. I dont know many whites who get it but I do know that black parents have community representatives that tell them how to work the system. This is what is wrong with the U.S. and the black community. The people or ignorant and told what to do and dont understand how bad it is hurting them.

Well if this is true then the school is not following federal law and can easily get sued by a competent lawyer. The kid needs an IEP with behavioral intervention plan which the school system should provide. NOT the parent. I would be appalled too.

A normal can never be fully prepared for the ghetto style verbal assault. It stuns you with the sheer anger and ignorance and you realize that you have neither ever been this angry or this ignorant about Anything in your life and this person is that angry and ignorant about Everything in their life .
We have all been there. You have to experience it to understand it. It's like being on a hostile and irrational planet where the assumptions about sentient life are precisely opposite.
