When I was a kid, part of the fun of Christmas eve was the big family gathering which including me and all of my cousins having firecracker wars. Every year someone would get hurt (not bad enough to have to go to the hospital or anything), but I am pretty sure fireworks and Christmas eve has been a thing for awhile.
