It is stupid, and incredibly played out.
Just like "germans", some people see something on a message board, think it's the cool thing to do and want to earn cool points by using it (hey, if I use this phrase, maybe they'll like me!), and at that point it's saturated the entire place and it won't go away.
It's painfully unfunny and, at this point, unoriginal.

Sucks for you having square as friends that don't joke around.
My buddies have been saying a variation of baw for over a decade as a joke/greeting well b4 it was on TD, & you need to get over yourself
