Yea, I didn't know any better. The 30 yr old fence I replaced had done it the same way, so I am hoping mine last 30 yrs.

High or not I'm not sure I would go ahead w the project using 4x4 posts. Use metal and straps. Talk to another company or 2 and get some bids. JMO

My RSMeans book lists bare costs of 6' treated pine fencing at $27.50 per linear foot

I just had 200LF of #1 grade cedar with heavy gauge steel posts board on board installed for $5800. This included 1 standard gate and 1 double gate to get cars in or out. Guy double posted both gates and set posts 3.5' down. Also included pressure treated 2x6 kick board and cedar trim on top. Looks great.

I'm in Dallas area BTW. I think $5800 was a decent price for the quality of the fence.

If you live in Louisiana, you should make sure you know what wood is best for the humidity and termites and the like!

Go for cedar if it's cheaper unless the pine is guaranteed to withstand all of that!

Had one built, similar length, slightly linger, with cedar, $2400. Built one myself recently ~170ft with pine boards for ~$1200. I would say your quote is a little high but not un-fair.

I'm getting about 120 feet of 6' pine privacy fence and I just got quoted around $21.75/foot. Included in that are two gates. The quote is higher than that for cedar.

For cedar, I paid $11 / ft.

Your price seems rather high. I'd get two more quotes to get an honest apples-to-apples comparison.

And ask contractor to use wood screws, no nails.

was said sort of tongue in cheek because there are some fence post setting purists that think that is a terrible thing to do because it makes a concrete "shoe" that constantly holds water and decreases the life of the fence post and you might have to replace it in 30 yrs. instead of 31

all wooden fence posts will eventually rot at the ground level

Rent auger two man auger

Ask buddy to help auger holes.

Auger every 8 feet

Put 4x4 post in holes

Mix quikcrete in wheel barrow

Fill holes with quikcrete and level post

As mix starts to set, continue check level and adjust if need due to movement

Wait a day

Fasten 2x4s to posts using galvanized screws or nails. Three bands per span of 8ft

Starting at one end of fence, fasten slats to bands. Two screws or nails into each band

Youtube gate design of your choice and build

Unless you just have zero time available, you are just paying somebody handsomely to do one of the easiest home projects. Building a fence is very simple.
