The cruise staff keeps a list of people who remove the automatic gratuity.

And what do they do with the list?
FTR, I am one who tips above the automatic amount. I'm just curious as to what they can do negatively to one who doesn't tip. Give him the shitty stateroom in the future?

(78/3)=$26/6 = $4.33 per person per meal.

So if you have a breakfast worth $12, that equates to a tip of 36%. That sucks.

In the evening you have a meal worth $40 then that's a tip of 11%.

It all probably evens out.

And you can bet the server also had a tip jar and would look at you like a poor if you didn't tip a $1.00 for every $6.50 beer you drank.

Frick these shite stains

Sorry dude cruises are trashy. It’s about the quality of people not the quality of ship.

If it's it automatic tip, is it a tip?
Tipping is the one of the most illogical things we do just give me the total bill. Leaving the tax out of the price is dumb too. We are behind Europe on this

True, But even when I’m in Europe I still tip to reward very good service. I don’t do the full 20-25% like over here, but if a waiter or waitress takes really good care of us I’ll tip 5-10%

Yeah, I agree I think it’ll even out. I did a little more research on it last night, and now I kind of like the idea and I’m comfortable with that. But what will make me grumpy is if everyone I interact with lingers or asks for individual tips.

Will there be a tip line on every receipt I have to sign throughout the cruise ?

I can almost guarantee you with that much in auto tips the cruise lines take a good chunk for themselves. No idea how it works but I'd be surprised if they have it down well enough to actually divy your tips out appropriately.

Exactly. The “port fees” and gratuity are just hidden charges that they don’t reveal until the last step of the booking process. They lure you in by advertising low rates that seem like a good deal, but with all of the extra added fees they tack on at the end, it’s sctually not a deal at all.

This is what they have on their website for the breakdown, To me it seems like the house is grossly over tipped. I would think that food and drink servers would get a larger portion

Yeah I wouldn’t consider the cruise that I’m doing a good deal at all. But it’s what the family wanted.

The other issue I have with that, is the cruise doesn't treat it as 'tips' but as actual pay for the employees. They know exactly how much almost everyone makes and their hourly wage then reflects that additionally. I'd much rather they just treat the cruise as an 'all inclusive' type of thing and prefer no tips.

And this doesn't go on in virtually every other business in America?
Bought a car? Been upsold on something at Best Buy? Hell, go buy a concert ticket for $25 at the box office, and pay a $9 "service" charge to Ticketmaster and another $4 "venue" fee.

That forced tipping is a load of crap. Just charge me the additional amount as part of the cruise price and I won't complain but I don't like the forced tip.

People have not been tipping at all for years, and this is what we've come to.

This is the problem and it doesn't really have anything to do with cruise ships specifically.

The problem is a whole lot of people in general do not tip or tip next to nothing when they are out of town, on vacation, etc.

Wherever you have a lot of tourists, restaurants and bars have the auto gratuity. Whenever I am at a bar or restaurant in Miami that is in a touristy area there is automatic gratuity. Even for chain restaurants that do not have the auto gratuity at any other locations. Go to one at Bayside, South Beach, North Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale beach, etc all those same restaurants that normally dont do it have to do it or they would have no employees.

People in general are not so great or honest when no one is watching or they think they can get away with something with no one knowing.

Cruise ships also get a lot of foreign guests who's traditions do not include tipping.
