Ehh... so this is a Daily Mail write up that originated from a story published on Campus Reform LINKwhich is a conservative website that uses college students for it's journalists and is backed by the conservative Leadership Institute. The subject is from a professional book series that nobody outside of education will likely ever buy and read which makes it rather easy to set a narrative of what it's about that few will investigate. Color me skeptical of her reading of the material (if she even read it all) and the slant she purports it to have.
Just looking at that site it's agenda is pretty clear and anything read there should be taken with a huge grain of salt just as should be done with any site that gives vague, inflammatory snippets, with little context, and inflammatory headlines.

She is a junior at Barnard College, and also contributes regularly to The College Fix, USA Today College, Red Alert Politics, and Quillette Magazine. She formerly held a post with the Columbia Spectator and has been featured on Fox News and on the Drudge Report.

I'm assuming you don't care for the Daily Mail or Campus Reform.
That's the problem, though. If stuff like this is par for the course in purportedly educational circles, that's the thought process that gets disseminated.
Figuring out a news site/source has an agenda isn't difficult or earthshattering in and of itself. Agree with taking news from ANY source with a substantial grain of salt, but still need to call a spade a spade.

No they don't
Guess you never heard of Norse mythology or Greeks Romans etc
And even if that were true wouldn't it be debatable to say they were the most superior culture for being in control?

The Daily Mail is tabloid garbage. So no, I don't care for it any more than I care for a site like Huffington Post. I only skimmed the Campus Reform site but with nearly every story being a LOOK AT THIS LIBERAL bullshite variety I got the feeling I was essentially looking at a conservative DailyKos.
I just have a hard time taking any website seriously that relies on blatant click bait titles like that. The fact that the story from OP comes from a book series that pretty much nobody is going to be willing to buy to see for themselves (which the CR writer surely knows) and that she gave us a "We contacted the author but she didn't get back to us in time for publication" when this is in no way a story that should be considered so time sensitive they couldn't wait for a response before publishing just gives me the feeling that a lot of what is being claimed is likely twisted narrative.
You can make pretty much anyone sound crazy if you pull quotes correctly and to just yank a couple of key phrases w/o much context around them doesn't really give me much confidence in the strength of the claims.
If it had been a full on book review that would be one thing but it came off more like something you might see on a site like Jezebel where the author blatantly twists the facts to fit their narrative.

a. that's somewhat irrelevant. did she write what is reported? if so, then circulation is a speculative comment at best
b. i thought this was a series for distribution among educational institutions. i bet it gets more circulation than you're assuming
c. the "math is racist" stuff isn't even her own idea. i've made many threads about others making similar claims prior

This is the goal. Not to lift people up, it's to bring people down. A wise philosopher talked of this once
There is unrest in the forest
There is trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas
The trouble with the maples
And they're quite convinced they're right
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade?
There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream 'oppression!'
And the oaks, just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet,
Axe,
And saw

I really DGAF because I just don't tie myself to any source. Most of what's floating out there is garbage.
That said, if something is idiotic and the facts were relayed without error, it's a little silly to go off on a tangent about how much you hate a source if the story is accurate. Your speculations on the circulation notwithstanding, it makes it seem like your ire is misdirected.
The bottom line is that shite like this in academia is counterproductive as frick.

Sure looks straight forward here. What are you disputing?

I'm not going to address the fact that a Hispanic is saying that mathematics is racist and filled with white privilege, while simultaneously being a minority in the mathematical field. I'd choke on the irony before I got a decent thought out. However...
quote:What you meant to say is that people in a math class are judged on whether or not they're good at math, right? Look, if you're a dummy, you're a dummy. There's nothing wrong with it - but if you're a dummy, you can't be called smart. It doesn't work like that. That's why we have different words for different things.
Minorities 'have experienced microaggressions from participating in math classrooms… (where people are) judged by whether they can reason abstractly,' she wrote
quote:Jeez, a little non-inclusive of Asians, aren't we? The first statistically "white" country (Switzerland) was ranked 8th in the world in math scores recently. 8th! 1st - 7th Place - ASIAN. I don't see Asians as white (more of an off-white if anything).
Who gets credit for doing and developing mathematics, who is capable in mathematics, and who is seen as part of the mathematical community is generally viewed as White,' Gutierrez stated, according to a report by Campus Reform

Seriously. My mom holds a math degree from Michigan and I have a little sister who is a senior math major at baylor.

I'm white and hold a math degree - didn't realize how racist i was until now.

You've stumbled across the entire basis of the "progressive" mindset. If you call a spade a spade, and they don't like it, you're a racist. If they call a heart a spade, and you refute it, you're exclusionary, and a racist.
The inevitable result of the "progressive" mindset: If you're Caucasian, you're inherently racist and should feel bad for being white. If you don't, you're a super racist.

While you did make an excellent analogy there, the "spade" found in the idiom in question has nothing to do with playing cards. It is a shovel.
