What I am bitching about is this is the first time I ever saw this.
Been having blood drawn every week for almost 10 years now. That is a lot off sticking to see this for the first time.

Well I guess they could use needles over and over and just get some random person off the street to do the procedure for a lot less. All that stuff costs money to buy. Cotton balls, alcohol pads , tubes, needles, staff etc.

You aren't just paying for the phlebotomist...you are also paying for the supplies needed for the actual lab draw.
Alcohol swabs, tourniquets, gauze, butterfly or whatever collection devices they have stocked, coban wrap, etc.
That's true. Also, phlebotomists are sued at a rate equal to or higher than orthopedic surgeons so that adds up as well.

They charged $16 just for that
Yeah but the "insurance adjustment" was $14.86 so really only $1.14 was paid.

On a side note, I would MUCH prefer a professional sticking me to some Give No Shits floor RN who would just digs around with the catheter looking for a vein.
JB, there is a big difference in what an RN and a phlebotomist does. The lab person 90+% of the time sticks you in the AC which is the inner aspect of the elbow, which btw is usually the easiest access to the vein. The RN is looking for access in your hand or forearm usually where the veins roll, burst, or are seemingly nonexistent due to illness or obesity. Believe me she cares and does not like having to "dig" searching for the vein. Her work is nowhere near done when that IV is started.

$16 for being stuck with a needle seems reasonable to me.

That is what is sickening about medical billing.
Nickel and dime the patient and insurance to death and get the bill as high as possible just to collect a few cents on the dollar.

This is the thread in which people who get screwed by private companies blame the government.

Do you want an unpaid volunteer poking you with needles or do you want a trained professional? I've seen what inexperienced people can do and if I were you, I'd pay the extra $16 and be grateful you're a patient at a legit medical facility and not a training partner for a class involving mother frickers who cannot find blood vessels.

People should have catastrophic coverage only.
It's close to that now. HSA is just a cap on max out of pocket.
