I think it's long overdue that this is in the mainstream. I also think Sen Johnson had a quite valid point when he put a hold on the legislation. If two Presidents have to share a day in February, why don't they just cancel MLK Day and celebrate him on Juneteenth? It has zero effect on the number of federal holidays and you still have two periods in the year that are all about black history.

And before someone wants to be a jagbag, I'm posting this here because I am curious about normal peoples' views...not politards.

So, does this mean all of MLK's work was for naught?

Is there a reason you are against an extra federal holiday?

I don't think it's a day I get to take off. Read the news.

Because the OT is a veritable Mensa picnic compared to the PT?

But I agree. It's a sad bigotry that the only human being we have a federal holiday for was a womanizing preacher who happened to have been shot. I mean I appreciate much of what MLKJ plagiarized and some of what he made up himself. But if that's the best we can come up with for hero worship. Yikes.

I don’t really care for it. I’d prefer it be the ratification of the 13th. That’s when black slaves were declared free. We don’t celebrate the last day of the American Revolution. We celebrate our declaration of independence from Britain.

I’m off work for all federal holidays but I’m also realistic to know that we have a holiday in almost every month of the year. At some point it affects productivity.
My proposal is pass legislation to cap the number of paid federal holidays. For those holidays that fall on a weekend - oh well. We don’t get the previous or following day off. Example: July 4th is a few Sunday’s from now but everyone will get off the 5th. Eliminate that.
I think as the calendar rotates it will keep offices from closing so much.

What I really don’t like is that this holiday is being framed as the “real” Independence Day. It’s anti-American.

This. Pretty sure all federal holidays are celebrating America or a person important to America for something great they did. If you listened to any discussion of Juneteenth they framed it as a day to remember how terrible America is and how far we still have to go. It is definitely not being sold as a day to celebrate America.

They also don’t mention anything about Lincoln, they don’t mention anything about the 100s of thousands of US troops who died to make it happen.

If you point any of this out though you are a racist and need to be canceled
