To distinguish them from dress shoes, casual dress, boots, etc., I've always called them tennis shoes, even if they're running shoes.

When I got to LSU, at my first Tiger Band practice the director said "make sure you are wearing tennis shoes." I remember thinking "man that's awfully specific. It's a good thing I played tennis in high school and have them. I hope everyone else knows." (I know, CSB)
