FREER, Texas — A rattlesnake handler has died after he was bitten at the Rattlesnake Roundup in Freer.
Freer Police Chief Hector Doria confirmed to 3News that Eugene De Leon Sr. was bitten in the shoulder around 1 p.m. Saturday. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Corpus Christi but died Saturday night at approximately 9 p.m.
One of the organizers of the Rattlesnake Roundup said that De Leon was performing and handling rattlesnakes in front of a crowd at the time he was bitten.

Instead of being confined to an extremity, it probably went straight into his system.

Getting bit in the torso and head is worse than an extremity.

TigrrrDad is....
death by venomous snakebite today.
Slow year so far - I’ve only caught 4 cottonmouths and 1 copperhead so far. I must have aggravated the frick out of the cottonmouths on my creek last year and they moved on.

Immediately thought Appalachian area with the headline. Saw Texas, and it makes sense that this was a freak accident at an annual event/festival, and not religious snake handling. Basically the equivalent of an Alligator tour baw like ZZ Loupe getting bit by an alligator—surprising, but not unexpected.

Unusual for a couple of reasons.
1. Pit viper bites (like a rattlesnake) are not normally fatal despite movies and old wives tales.
2. I am dumbfounded that the fricking Rattlesnake Round Up doesn't have a doctor with anti venom on site. That's just crappy planning.
