the funny thing is most people will say smoking is the worst but then say oh a cigar is ok
Or the parents who spend all day on their phones and ignore their kids 99% of the time. If I was a kid nowadays id rather have a dad spend time with me with a cig hanging out of his mouth then what I see with most parents now who can't even take their eyes off a phone.

It's a shitty example to set for your kids because of the risk-reward. I smoked because my parents smoked (Dad smoked a freaking pipe lol like he was Hugh Hefner).I forced myself to quit at age 30 with kids on the horizon. It's just not the kind of thing you want to hang on a kid. It's hard to get them to take you seriously about health if you are jonesing for nicotine. It reveals your weakness and lack of control to your children and to some extent makes that acceptable. It's just a lower bar than many want to set. I know that makes smokers really mad.
That said, some people are barely hanging on. They aren't real far up that Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs scale, they are just living lives of quiet desperation. Smoking, drinking, sitting all day on the couch, whatever. The last thing we need is somebody telling them what they should or should not do and taking their cigarettes.

Serious answer, been trying to quit for awhile and I never smoke in front of or around kids. Also I'll go out of my way to wash hands and get rid of the smell as much as possible (futile I know) before interacting with them and make sure they know it's a bad decision I regret.
Internet answer, mind your fricking business.
Pretty much how I was. I don't know, I guess b/c I use to smoke i can understand. I also understand the people who complain about it who never smoked. Smokers don't bother me, vast majority I know or see in public are courteous about it and walk away from everyone. The vast majority of smoking parents do the same around their kids. I would say it's more of an issue among lower class regarding being considerate with smoking.

Where do you draw the line? Should we not be concerned if he was doing some other sort of physical abuse to his child? By your logic it's none of our business, so...

Everybody has weaknesses. Again my best friends dad smoked, even smoked in the house and around us as kids. My own dad being the best, my buddy's dad has to be the second best man and dad I've ever known. Like I've said, most of my friends who grew up in a smoking home, have grown up to be great people. Even my dad grew up in a home where both parents smoked, he also admired my grand dad.

Good lord, so basically 99% of kids who grew up in the 50s were abused b/c their parents smoked?

Agreed. Me included. I'm just saying if you have the capacity to improve yourself, the capacity to elevate your life and your health, you should. If not for yourself, for your kids, who are watching your every move intently. That's why I quit smoking.

It's all about priorities. Some people just put themselves and their own wants at a higher priority than what's best for their kids.

What about parents who are smokers. Honky Lips....

Not to mention it is all in their clothes then they hold their young children right after coming inside.
Don't get it either, but to each their own

People in the 50's didn't fully know/understand the long term effects of smoking. It has been proven now by numerous medical professionals that it causes cancer among other ailments.
Everyone in America now knows what it does to you.

My parents were smokers when I was a kid. Of course, lots of people were smokers back then. I even went into stores and bought cigarettes for them.
I always worry that I'm going to have health issues later in my life from growing up around smokers. Both my parents died from smoking related cancer.

It's well known the dangers of second hand smoke to children...especially children that have any medical conditions(ex:asthma).
One of the questions we ask parents when their child is admitted to the hospital is if there are any smokers in the home, if they say yes we ask who smokes and if anyone is smoking inside the house. It helps the doctors to know if the child is being exposed to environmental factors that could further exacerbate their medical condition(esp if it is of a respiratory nature).

Pretty sure it is illegal to smoke in a car with minors, or until some age that i don't know.

I was a child of the 80s, most of the parents of my childhood friends smoked. My dad smoked until my little brother was born. I grew up sitting in the car while my best friend's parents smoked in the car with the window down. It was a different time then, people knew smoking was bad but didn't realize the extent.

It was understood even back then smoking was harmful to you. My grandad remembered very well, at least going back to early 60s, the doctor telling him to quit smoking or he'd "ruin" his lungs. My dad who was a teenager in the 60s knew by then smoking was very bad for your health. I'm pretty sure that in the 50s people were very aware of it, maybe not as aware as we are now, but people knew it was detrimental to your health.

At the rate people are quitting, smokers are now persecuted and prices of cigarettes going through the roof, this is probably not going to be an issue for very many more years IMO. I know if cigs cost as much as they do now when I started I couldn't have even afforded to smoke regularly and thus I wouldn't have even been able to get hooked on them. Add to that the fact that you have to hunt around for an allowable place to do it that's usually so far off the grid it's not worth it.
I'm no anti-smoking Nazi and I can't stand people who are, but the trend of anti-smoking is getting more oppressive all the time and will eventually make it a thing of the past, personal freedoms be damned.

For a moment forget about the second hand smoke. I'd like to ask specifically about the example a person sets when they smoke in front of their kids. Does the parent say "I know I'm setting a terrible example for my kids, but I don't care...this is more important." Immediately I think of kids in front of a store waiting for mom or dad to finish smoking.
And yes the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's were different. This is 2016.
