I can’t understand why.

I’ve lived in small towns of 10k. I’ve lived in cities with 300k.

The cities are overall better than the small towns in every single metric except maybe noise pollution. The people are better, smarter, more attractive on the whole. The transit systems work better. There’s more to do. More culture. More hobby enthusiasts. Better paying jobs, more money, more opportunity, better roads, better police, better fire. More food options.

I’m at a loss here. What am I missing?

I currently live in the country on 200 acres. The quiet is amazing. It’s life changing. But man if the town doesn’t fricking suck arse.

For you.

Not everyone needs 1000 choices for lunch and to be constantly entertained. Most people prefer cities in their 20s, but when they start getting older, more established they seek less entertainment and more fulfillment.

Won't lie man, AK is the only state i haven't been to, but it is on my list of wants to visit. I do not tolerate cold winters well, but aside from that - it seems to be a really nice area

I have lived in New Orleans, philly, nyc and a couple of other large cities. Currently I’ve in a town with about 23k and I wouldn’t move if you paid me. It the perfect the size.

There are some amazing coastal towns here, but the weather chases most people away.

The Southeast panhandle is the size of Florida with only 70k people, almost half live in Juneau. Love the smaller towns.

Alabama has some cool small towns outside of the Black Belt. Everything inside of the Black Belt is a hellhole.

Jasper, Athens, Florence, Huntsville, Decatur, Helena. Outside of finding a place to party until 2AM, they have just about everything else. Florence is my top in state retirement spot. Small college town, awesome lake, plenty of places to eat, fantastic downtown.

Some are, some are good and some are great.

The northeast, Vermont, Mass, Upstate New York, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire is full of nice, vibrant small towns.

Small towns are not the problem. Small towns full of crackheads and baby's mamas are the issue.

I have often entertained the idea of moving to a smaller town like Hot Springs for example, which is a small town comparitively.

For a semi major tourist attraction, Hot Springs is pretty trashy.

Man, I love Hot Springs and Arkansas generally. The Natural State is beautiful.

I guess I mostly stay around downtown and the National Park area when I go. I just like it because there's way less people than where I live and life moves slower.

Depends on the small town. There are some crappy ones but there's lots of very nice places too. I think the key is tempering your expectations. You have to expect and accept a different way of life.

the rise of section 8 and other housing subsidies have destroyed small towns.

About to chime in with that. New England is filled to the brim with great small towns.

I grew up small town Arkansas. It grew from about 1000 to 4600 in the last 40 years. The school district has always had a good reputation. I live in Little Rock since 2001 but my parents still live out there. In my 20's I would have agreed with you. Now in mid 40's I like going out there to visit. Usually try to spend a couple nights. Plenty to eat, can shoot guns in the back yard, ride four wheelers, etc. It's serene, and a 25 minute drive from the suburb life and 45 from the city
