No problem with a small town if there is plenty to do outdoors within 1hr.

Those small towns in La, Ms, Al, surrounded by nothing but pine trees and a couple small lakes for is hell on earth.

Those small town people are deprived of the wonderful big city culture!

Small towns in the south and Midwest are horrible. Small towns in New England and mountain west are awesome.

Very true. Culture matters and it shows through in social pathologies.

But there are still lots of shithole small towns in New England. I can't speak as much on the west b/c I don't have family out there.

Depends on what's happening in the small town.

Nothing. Nothing happens in small towns.

But that's why they're awesome.

Southern Wisconsin. There are some gorgeous main street America towns there. They look so much different than rural towns in Louisiana and Texas.

I like the medium sized cities. Between 100K and 400K

I think the smallest I could do is about 40K

Once you get into the really small towns you don't have many amenities.

Live in a town of about 5k. Ill take that over a big city.
This. I've lived my adult life in several large cities, several college towns, and now a village of 4K. I grew up in a city of 35K. I don't mind living where we do now because we're only a 15 minute drive from a 60K city and 2 minutes away from interstates that put us within 3 hours of multiple major cities.

The only thing I hate about it here is the constant whining about bringing in new businesses. They're all about protecting their precious IGA and completely arse "BBQ" restaurant. The latest argument was over a resident wanting to open a coffee drive thru with the old timers saying it wasn't needed because of the two gas stations (not locally owned) and they didn't want the traffic.

There's nothing like a road trip, getting off the interstate and exploring small town America. Courthouse, dinners, old drugstores.

I live in a town of 2,400 and love it. We have a few bars, restaurants, Ace hardware, and a 27 hole golf course. It's legal to ride your golf cart through town which we use as our primary vehicle.

Great place to live and raise kids.

I agree about LaGrange and Giddings for that matter. But small towns in the upper midwest are pretty nice. I attribute that to active farming regions close enough to civilization to keep people there. Rural towns in say the Dakotas are not as nice. Too remote. And West Texas, nobody wants to live out there anymore.

GA has some wonderful small towns especially in the northern part of the state. I lived for 6 years in one but south of ATL. Unfortunately the white flight suburbs and overburbs of ATL swallowed our town.
Western NC also has some great small towns
