I have a bathroom in need of renovation and I'm thinking of installing a skylight in it to bring in natural light since it's in the middle of the house and has no windows. It's a small bathroom and I'm thinking some natural light would help it feel bigger to some extent.

I'm worried about the following, though:
1. Potential for quite a hot bathroom in the summer, which would lead to higher energy costs to keep the house cool

2. Possible condensation issues with the contrast in warmer and colder air inside the tube. I don't want a leak to occur, leading to rot of my ceiling materials.

Anyone ever install one of these things and do you have any tips?

Cons: Birds will see you naked on the john before your showers.

I already thought about that but apparently they're made to filter the light and have caps on the bottom sides to censor my natural form to the rest of nature and any pervert flying a drone overhead.

Cons:
You’re cutting a hole into your nice, water right roof.

It will leak. Not a matter of might leak, it will definitely leak at some point.

This. Not to mention if it gets direct sunlight, your bathroom will get pretty hot.

I believe you are underestimating the extent to which I go overboard with caulk and silicon on every project

Every skylight, no matter how well installed, is going to leak...

Are there covers I can place over the indoor part of it to block out light during the heat of the summer?

My dream house will have an outdoor shitter in my back yard behind privacy fencing and thick shrubbery. I'll adjourn there in nice weather.

My parents have lived in their current house since 1992 and theirs has never leaked to the point we have ever once noticed

Pros: Lots of free light
Cons: They all eventually leak and need to be replaced. My last one was 25 years old

I'd suggest you get one with a shade if you're worried about heat. Or, since the ones with a built-in shade are much more expensive, get an aftermarket shade and cut it to fit. I have one in my kitchen, and it is fine. Had to replace the old one, and never once thought about getting rid of it. I like natural lighting too much.

Watch a bunch of YouTube videos for installation tips

Pros- natural sky light

Cons- they will leak. You will pay a lot of money, over time, fixing the leaks.

I have repaired many skylight leaks. I would never install them in my house.

I believe you're ignoring good advice.

Your mind seems to be made up. Go for it. I just hope you have balls enough to let us know when you start feeling drips of water on your head while taking a dump. If you can't find this thread because of Chicken's shirt search feature, no worries. One of the OT's more persistent types will be more than happy to spend all night searching so they can bump this thread and say "I told you so."

Yes. The ones I've seen are like a spring loaded window blind that runs in a track on the long edges. You can close it partially or completely.

I've also see louvred slats that look much nicer. It's basically half of a plantation blind.

pretty sure he is talking about those mirrored tubes that redirect natural light into rooms and also have an electric light in them during night time hours. LINK

its not a rectangular skylight like you are thinking of that the flashings always end up leaking and causing issues
