worth checking into how often the clear cap on top needs replacing (sun fading and all) but the flashing they use is no different then the wind turbin attic vents and those last 40 years without leaking

Secret agents like to fall through them. Would not recommend.

They don’t leak if installed properly

Saying a sky light will leak is like saying any vent in your roof will leak. It's certainly a possibility, but extremely unlikely if done properly.
A master bedroom it's nice to have natural light, for any other I wouldn't worry about it.

well to be fair to the guy, im sure what he was talking about was how the rectangular sky lights act like a water damn on your roof and water puddles up trying to drain around them. now you add leaves or pine needles from trees and old shingles, and that is a recipe for water to get behind the shingles and get into your house. it always amazed me why they dont always make the flashings for them pointed so they dont have a flat spot to trap water

It will leak. Not a matter of might leak, it will definitely leak at some point.
Listen to this man! I am a glazing contractor and deal with skylights on a weekly basis. They all leak. Some leak a little. Some are Niagra Falls. Be assured though that it will leak and you won't be able to stop it.

Just had 2 estimates both come in around $4000 for material and labor for two 4’ x 2’ skylights on our vaulted ceiling. Would be a straight forward install. That price is just too high for me though so we aren’t doing it.
I will say that I’d the light is in the north side slope then you may not have as much an issue with glare and excessive heat.

I don't understand these now that 5000k natural light LEDs are available. You can't see the sky so just stick in an LED and save yourself $$$.

You can't just go out of one of the many doors your house has and look up at the sky from time to time???????
