The poster features Lawrence as her blue-skinned character Mystique being strangled by antagonist Apocalypse, played by Oscar Issac. Unsurprisingly, many are not happy with the imagery 20th Century Fox chose.
Actress Rose McGowan weighed in, as well, while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter:
There is a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is the way to market a film. There is no context in the ad, just a woman getting strangled. The fact that no one flagged this is offensive and frankly, stupid. The geniuses behind this, and I use that term lightly, need to to take a long hard look at the mirror and see how they are contributing to society. Imagine if it were a black man being strangled by a white man, or a gay male being strangled by a hetero? The outcry would be enormous. So let’s right this wrong. 20th Century Fox, since you can’t manage to put any women directors on your slate for the next two years, how about you at least replace your ad?
The Mary Sue also commented on the negative implications of showing a naked woman being choked by a male three times her size in such a public and promotional manner.

This is just idiotic. If you want women to be superheros you can't be upset when they are involved in the same physical violence as the male superheros. Physical confrontation is part of the physical struggle.
FFS, lobbying to have women in the movies and then being upset when they are featured equally in the movies is ridiculous.
There might be an outcry. Because people are stupid.
However, the only good justification for the outcry would be if the black man was being strangled by a white man BECAUSE he was black. Or if the gay man were being strangled BECAUSE he was gay. Jesus fricking christ people. You can't exclude people from the world because of their characteristics. That ends up meaning black men or gay men can't play parts where they suffer the kinds of loss that allow them to then experience recovery and redemption. Or the kinds of parts where they grow emotionally but don't have to go back and kill every slavemaster or homophobe.

There has been a fascinating alliance between the religious right and feminist left. Both of whom would love to blame media like video games, violent movies, or pornography for social dysfunction. There have been hundreds and hundreds of studies on teh subject and no credible evidence stands out.
It is time for the religious right and feminist left to realize not everything they personally dislike is a credible boogeyman.
