I once landed at the airport in Singapore and my bags weren't checked. It was around midnight and the people working were just standing around with their backs to us and we just walked on through.

Most of y'all too young to remember the Michael Fay case in the early 90's. Fay was 18 years old and went over there on a school trip or something. He vandalized a street sign and they were going to give him lashes with a wet cane. It became an international incident and Bill Clinton tried to get him released. Singapore refused, but did agree to reduce the number of lashes they gave him.
Also, illegal immigration is a crime punishable by caning. Even just overstaying your visa will get you caned.
This might be why Singapore is considered the nicest city in the world. Zero litter, zero crime, super clean.
