Thanks to the diligent work of the Baton Rouge Police Department, between August 2013 and August 2014, 1,087 DUI arrests were made. Contrary to drivers’ beliefs, they are not getting past trained public safety professionals.

Something changed, however, from last August to now, as 893 arrests were made during this period. This is a 17.8 percent drop from the year prior.

This drop directly coincides with the introduction of Uber to the Baton Rouge area.

Good. I hate on Uber a lot, because I feel like its drivers are uneducated power bottoms, but anything to reduce drunk driving I am for.

Or maybe more DWI arrests are a deterrent to the crime?

Possibly people can't afford to go out to drink as much since the economy is down as well.

TL;DR version: BRPD has gotten lazy/stopped arresting drunk drivers.

Well, the drivers definitely are. Maybe not all of the passengers. Some of the passengers are.

Where I live those who use Uber tend to be the liberal hipster types.

Got busted at a DUI checkpoint a few months ago.

Not for driving drunk. Got a ticket for my inspection sticker.

Thank God they were there. I could have really hurt someone.....

Colorado passed a law supporting Uber, Lyft, etc. You're pretty much socially frowned upon for driving instead of using those ride services up here. Doesn't matter if your lib/middle/conservative. It's just plain stupid to not use them if you're having some drinks.

You're either a dumb arse or a douche. Pick your poison.

Well, I have never been mistaken for or accused of being anything even resembling a liberal or a hipster and I love using UBER. Money never changes hands, I know how much the ride will cost before using, so the driver can't screw you when you get to your destination. I'm not in a nasty arse cab. It is significantly cheaper than yellow cab, and they show up on time.
