Hilary's been sucking up to our Alien Overlords for a while now.

They're setting us up for it and have been for quite some time.

"the chance of it happening more than once are nil" or "The chance of it happening once are nil"

Your quote and the post you responded to don't match

Most aren't bright enough to read sarcasm though.

some are smaller and brighter.

I wish we would keep our heads down. no way we can deal with space brothers.

From everything we know about the physics and chemistry involved, life should be reasonably common throughout the universe and not improbable at all.

Life that can communicate across interstellar distances, not so much. But simple life (like algae) should be basically anywhere that isn't too hot and isn't too cold.

Best case scenario. They would never invade because there's no point taking over a planet that doesn't support intelligent life.

Must have been red shifted. It was the opening ceremony of the 1936 Olympics and that was less than 94 years ago.

Everything I've learned about astronomy has told me that the random creation of a sentient species is so statistically improbable that the chance of it happening more than once is almost nil.

You must have learned it from a shite Astronomy class.

We discussed this in one of my classes and there is a number associated with probability of life formation. However, due to the vastness of space and the number of stars/solar systems outside of our own, most believe that there are 100s, if not 1000s of other planets with life in our universe.

In the universe, perhaps. If you have an unlimited amount of tries there is no such thing of zero probability of a occurrence from occurring again. I mean "nil" might be an overstatement, but it certainly is up there.

I read a paper that an astronomer wrote a while back, I will do my best to try to find it. He theorized that for a sentient species to be able to evolve (both physically and mentally) to the point of a sentient status and then establish the knowledge and infrastructure to leave their solar system, hell even their planet, even further reduces the chance of meeting another alien species.

Heck, human beings will be fortunate to survive long enough for the technology to become available that can facilitate interstellar travel. We'll likely kill ourselves or the period of sustainability will run out for our rock in space/time.

Google the Fermi Paradox. Basically, it answers the question of "where is everybody else?" with the hypothesis that civilizations reach some kind of technological bottleneck which is difficult or impossible to survive-nuclear power, nanotechnology, AI, or something we haven't discovered yet.

The flip side of that is we don't know what a hyper-advanced alien civilization would look like. From our perspective, it may be indistinguishable from natural processes, or exist in another dimension we can't access.

I think it is as simple as our civilization is lucky as crap we haven't already been knocked back to the stone age by an asteroid. Earth's set up in the solar system might be some rare situation that the exact positions of our gas giants relative to available killer space rocks keeps us safer than planets in most systems.
