They're setting the bar high with a one billion dollar pricetag.

Sounds nice, but I don't see that area having the money to support that even with Haynesville starting to crank up again.

The bigger you dream, the more you can skim.

Did they do a study yet? If not, SWB knows a company.

This is beyond stupid.

Downtown's Sciport closed and just recently re-opened the IMAX theater that was in it.

The new Aquarium is broke.

The City of Shreveport has no business getting financially involved in that project.

This whole thing is a racket. The mayor tried to get a $30 million dollar bond issue for an arena that may or may not have been used by the Pelicans G-league. The citizens of Shreveport overwhelmingly opposed it and the city council voted down the idea.

So now, 3 guys have come back and headed up this "Gateway Development Consortium" which includes not only the arena but a school, government offices, retail and housing. They're pushing it as a potential billion dollar investment but the 3 heads of the project aren't developers or big money investors.

Here's the fun part. 2 of the 3 guys pushing this project, sit on the Caddo Parish Metropolitan Planning Commission. Theron Jackson, is the head of the MPC. The MPC has a voting power in issuing permits on things like land use for these types of projects. It gets better...

Shreveport has a mayoral race coming up in the fall. Mayor Tyler isn't thought to have the right support behind her to win re-election. The political "powers" in Shreveport are getting behind a 30 some year old guy named Adrian Perkins. Perkins is the son in law of state Senator Greg Tarver. Tarver has run for (and usually failed) a lot of elected positions. The leading donor to his campaigns? Theron Jackson. So Tarver's side owes some poltical goodwill to Theron Jackson for all those donations. And how convenient, the linked article goes on about how the Cross Bayou project needs the support and approval of the city.

Forgot to include.. here's some of their grand ideas for this project

Create apprenticeships in construction trades to enable young people who have committed non-violent felonies to get jobs on the project.

Aim to to give half of contracts to minority and women-owned businesses and to local enterprises.

Set up a mobile information center to travel through neighborhoods sharing information about jobs and contracting opportunities on the project.

Ensure that 30 percent of the residential housing in the project is "affordable."

Give preference to local retailers and restaurants.

None of this will get passed.

I do environmental investigations on that area like very 2 years because someone is proposing a new project that never get approved.

What about DBE requirements? That is what is really important.

yea it was funny to watch that little facebook movement take off. It became the cool thing to say WE DON'T WANT A BASKETBALL TEAM WE WANT NEW ROADS!!!

As someone from NOLA originally, I was never really sure what roads they were complaining about

Having Tarver around should really help Shreveport cure its problems. It is sad what Shreveport has become.
