Should we let old people out of jail to save money?

Obviously I’m not talking about death row inmates and other super dangerous criminals.
Would it make sense to look at letting the elderly out of jail? Let’s say people over 75 that didn’t commit heinous crimes, have been in prison for awhile (so not old people that just committed a crime) and are no longer a threat to society? It’s super expensive to keep these people in jail

If you let them out, tax dollars will still be used to take care of them. I doubt old people that have been in jail for a long time have a nest egg to fall back on.

Louisiana has been letting criminals out under an “ECC” program for a couple years now in an effort to lower the incarceration rate because no Louisiana politicians want to admit the real reason there’s such a high incarceration number.
This “Earned Compliance Credit” is given to the sentencees up front, and as long as they don’t murder anyone in prison; they’re going to get out early. 3 year sentence is paroled our normally in 1 year, but with ECC; a 3 year sentence means 6 months. I’m sure they’re really turning their lives around with the fear of that type of reprimand.

If someone is super old in jail and has been there for a while, it's probably because they committed a violent or other heinous crime.
Without knowing specifics of the idea, I can't imagine many fit into your particular criteria.

Yeah I mean they would have to find ways to determine this and I’m sure they would end up with some committee that does a terrible job. I guess they’d have to determine that they are old enough to no longer be a threat. Again, unfortunately I have no faith in our government to come up with a competent way to determine this
