Should we be required to have continuing education hours to keep a driver's license?

Is having a driver's license a right or a privilege?

For almost every professional profession requiring a license you need to have CE hours every so often in order for you to keep your license. Every couple years (or however long it is, I don't remember) we just simply pay a fee and renew our driver's license. I renewed mine last on my phone while sipping coffee during the morning news.

But this year I'm required to accumulate a certain number of hours of CE for me to renew the professional license that my occupation requires. On top of that, when I submit those hours to renew my license, I have to pay a fee.

Why can't we require every driver in the state of Louisiana to obtain just 1 hour of an online course with a test at the end in order to renew their license? We already pay a fee to do so, why can't we simply go online with our license number and take the test to ensure we have a "refresher" course in common road rules, including merging, stopping, speed limits, right lane vs. left lane, traffic circles, and the fact that when a light turns green, you DRIVE instead of continue to look at your fricking phone?

This may have been discussed before and if so, my apologies. Just a thought I had on this Friday morning.

Yes. After the age of 65 (or whatever) it should be mandatory.

We get the gist of your question without having to read 4 paragraphs of explanation.

You think a certification class will stop this?

This is the equivalent of the gun control people thinking that safety classes will prevent gun homicides.

I'm gonna go ahead and age discriminate as well.

Take your drivers test at 16, and again at 18. I say keep them at 4 year renewals after that, with a test that will update for any new or changed traffic laws. Then when you turn 65 you have to take the written and drivers test annually.

I can fully get on board with that. My damn inlaws are 70 and my God I'm terrified when they drive my child anywhere. They swerve, stop suddenly, and try to figure out all the buttons on the dashboard way too much. I've said things before but that just turns me into an a-hole in their eyes. No way for me to say "can you please drive more carefully so you don't kill my child" without sounding like a dick I guess.

You should have one every 10 years when you renew your license and then when you get over 60 years old you need to have it done every 5 years and over 70 take it every year.

Also the actual driving test needs to be much harder and not used to just create revenue by basically letting anyone drive ($$$$).

Bring back parallel parking in the tests.

Mine expired two weeks ago and I renewed it that day on my smartphone while driving down Hwy 90. I'm glad there was no education, testing or trips to the DMV involved.

I do think after a certain age you should have to retake the driving portion of the test.

It's every four years, unless you're > 70, then it's every two years. If this has changed, someone kindly educate me.

And yes, there should be some sort of CE to keep your license. I've often said we should have IQ tests to qualify for a license, but CE is more realistic.

I'd be ok with a requirement if you had some sort of a traffic violation. Oh wait, we already do that.

I never had to take it back 15 plus years ago. Supposedly in my area they are making them take it. However most around here have no need for parallel parking.

Don't see the need.

If you have too many moving violations or at fault accidents, you should lose your license (or the insurance companies will force you off the road).

Otherwise we'll assume you still know how to drive.

I'd honestly rather the State make driver's education more rigorous. I've a few European friends, and they are astounded at how bad American drivers are. Getting a driver's license in Europe is much more difficult. That's one thing they do right across the pond.

I drive a good bit for work, and I'm just not surprised by the stupid shite I see people do everyday on the road.
