Should the IRS offer Direct E-file?

You cannot currently direct e-file a federal income tax return, using an intuitive software interface, with the IRS.
The only direct way to file with the IRS is through Free File Fillable Forms, which are basically an electronic version of filling out paper forms. It performs very basic calculations but otherwise you need to enter everything in directly on the forms.
Many states offer direct filing of state tax returns using an interview type interface. Many other countries do this as well.
The IRS has received $10M to study offering this service direct to taxpayers, it was part of the Inflation Reduction Act which increased IRS funding.
Several GOP congressmen are trying to get the funding for this initative removed, because it would basically hurt TurboTax/H&R Block, as people would no longer need to pay for their software.
What says the O-T? Should the IRS offer this, or should they stay out of it?

That's fair, still would need an agency that collects tax, and they would have the same issues the IRS does.

Consumption tax can be collected and distributed by the states

The IRS should just tell us what we owe or what they owe us.

The IRS does not know everything about you. A good compromise is to send out prefilled out forms with the data the IRS does have and individuals can correct or add additional information to settle up.

Every citizen should be required to load a wheelbarrow full of pennies and nickels and personally deliver their taxes via wheelbarrow to their nearest tax office.
Maybe then citizens would demand more accountability for the taxes they pay. No paycheck deductions either. One big bill at the end of the year.

FreeTaxUSA saved me money by not having to pay the BS fees that TurboTax and HR on me since I have one or two things that force me to upgrade the plans I would've had to pay.
Free federal, $14.99 just to file state for me and my wife filing together.

Yes. Pisses me off that I spend $50 plus tax to file. Paying tax to file a tax return? SMFH.

We shouldn't be taxed at all. It's not like the government takes money from us to pay for anything. They've spent more than could ever be made up by taxes. It's all a farce that they need to steal our money

I look for the place on the corner to do my taxes. They also know where to direct me if I need some dependents.

Do you have a link for this claim? Or we’re just supposed to take your word for it.
