The $1000 fine sounds good to me for 1st offense, penalties can be incremental based on amount of offenses. Society got along just fine without the need for communicating while driving for close to 100 years before the invention of the cell/smart phone. The social anxiety about missing out (or FOMO) is out of control today.

...and before anyone else says it "You damn kids need to get off my lawn too!".

No. I'm much better at texting and driving than drunk driving

Yes, I think anything that distracts a driver, in which they have control of, should have the same penalties as a dui, when/if they are in an accident in which they are at fault.

i remember hearing a guy who lost his daughter in a car wreck with someone texting.

He said " my daughter is dead because someone was texting, how sad is that?"

i think about that every time i think of picking up my phone while driving.

Find a way to disable it only when someone is sitting in drivers seat. Not sure how feasible this may be but science should be able to figure this out.

Put a chip in the steering wheel and if the phone is within x inches of the chip, then screen/keyboard is disabled. May make Waze users get pissy.

Yes, should have some type of fine that is steep enough to hurt the pocketbook.....but......the law would have to begin with those that would be enforcing it. The sheriff department guys around here are terrible about driving while having a cell phone to their ear or looking at the laptop they have hanging on the dash.

Absolutely tragic for anyone to suffer. Eeven worse is if there is a more completely unnecessary reason someone's life should be ended...I do not know it.

It’s so much more dangerous to text and drive compared to drinking and driving

Absolutely.

I drive a lot, and I have lost count of how many close calls I've had with idiots who aren't even looking at the road. They literally have their heads down looking at their phones in their laps.

I can spot them a mile off. The first thing to notice is the swerving, then it's the constant change of speed. There is almost always a quick braking when they realize they haven't been paying attention.

If I could write tickets and get a percentage of each, I'd be able to retire a lot sooner than I expect.

It's worse. You have to take your eyes completely off the road to text.

I have the most common sense approach. Penalties in driving accidents should be doled out according to the amount of personal tragedy / damage. Does it really matter if someone is drunk and runs over a bicyclist or if a sober person runs over a bicyslist ???? The penalty should be the same. If I am drunk and don't cause any problems or cause any accidents but a sober person runs into everything and is habitually a bad driver, whose license should be suspended ? The law should punish the actual offense !

This article is old, but I know for a fact that the NC Highway Patrol still uses the vehicle in the article to warn of texting and driving dangers.

Very Sad Case

There was also a pretty big accident about 20 miles south of Asheville on I-26 a few years back. Traffic was nearly stopped late at night due to road maintenance/construction. A trucker was texting or surfing on his phone and literally drove over the top of half a dozen vehicles. He never applied his brakes. A bunch of people died. He lived but probably wishes he hadn't. He'll die in prison.
