I would lower it to 5 bills but make it a mandatory 24 hours in jail.

Missing a day of work would because you were in jail would hurt much worse than 1000. Especially if it happened more than once.

This is a problem to fix with tech, not laws.

I fully support making cell phones not function while driving. You can survive not looking at your phone for an hour.

I've gone back and forth on this. I get the sentiment, but what about using your phone for maps? Making calls? Emergency situations? People have been using cell phones for years no problem before they became computers in our pockets.

I think it would have to be a "dumb down" program that kicks in once you reach a certain speed. With just a few icons you can do maps, phone calls, or emergency dialing but no texting, email, web surfing, games, etc.

Put a chip in the steering wheel and if the phone is within x inches of the chip, then screen/keyboard is disabled. May make Waze users get pissy.

Great idea until ppl start holding their phone on the passenger side to text.

Of course, what the frick do we need freedom for?

It's overrated anyway. Let's just punish everybody since some people can't walk and chew gum.

Blue laws, malum prohibitum. Why don't we wait till somebody actually creates a victim before we make everybody jailable or arse rape them with fines?

Some people can drive Tipsy and distracted better than a lot of people can drive Stone sober and looking at the road. How do we make driving and being sleepy illegal? What about driving and staring at the trees through your sunroof? Slippery slope indeed.

If somebody gets in a wreck and it's found that they were negligent as the cause then I'm all for pulling a driver's license for years on end. Make them Uber and public transportation everywhere but to say everybody's an equally poor driver at some arbitrarily established blood alcohol level or to say that everybody just glues their eyeballs to their phone and drives blind when there are clearly people who hold the phone up by the windshield and are able to see everything in front of them, is disingenuous at best and at worst, typical government overreach that police departments are all too eager to accept as a way of cashing-in supplemental funding for their departments

Studies are coming out that it is just as dangerous to text and drive as to get behind the wheel impaired. I think a $1000 fine would keep people from texting on the roads, but many want stiffer punishment

Why do people have the need to be controlled and punished? You people really love some government running roughshod over you.

The only thing those 1000 dollar fines will change is the government wanting to collect more of them.
