Some states have it figured out for their residents. Georgia being one of them. My wife has some cousins that live over there and were able to take advantage of going in-state.

I believe I've seen some billboards in West Alabama that certain counties are considered in-state when going to Mississippi State as well. I think it has to do with some distance from Starkville.

Some of the schools in north Florida do this, or used to, for counties in southeast Alabama and south Georgia. I was pretty close to going to Florida State, since it is 90 minutes from my hometown, but I would have had to pay out of state the first year, and use my parents Destin condo address and then apply for in-state status.

The cap should be on out of state. In-state is what it is, but I don't think out of state should be 2-3X what the in-state rate is.

That doesn't mean that state universities should should be increasing tuition and fees like they have been. State college should be the affordable option.

I'm not saying everyone should go to college. I'm saying that people who belong in college should have the opportunity to attend their state support university without having to take out a ton of loans.

No they shouldn't be capped. What needs to happen at STATE SUPPORTED universities is that the state needs to start supporting them. You can google it for yourselves but go look at the percentage of funding decrease for the state universities by the state legislatures over the years. It is appalling. Most states continue to cut back the amount of money they will put towards higher education. That is why you see tuition and fees so high, because states aren't doing their jobs and financially supporting higher education.

As long as they don't raise taxes, sure. The root of the problem is you have professors that think they should be paid $100,000 a year.

colleges are a place that people can CHOOSE to attend to get a degree, if they are so inclined. If colleges want to raise tuition by 500% and people still pay it, they'll do it. Colleges won't even reduce their tuition unless it's hurting their bottom line and less and less people apply/get in.

The problem with that is that a university is not a business. The goal is not to maximize the bottom line but to educate the citizens.

Why, they are already heavily subsidized, so I guess they need more. Why cant someone go to a cheaper state school or a community college

Belong? Look, if you cannot afford college your option is a loan (an investment) or find anther career path. It is not the responsibility of the tax payer to provide free/cheap higher education to all. Want cheaper tuition? Perhaps you need to privatize all state schools.

who defines affordable? As long as their enrollments continue to max out every semester, it's obviously affordable to some people.

At no point in my life have I ever been qualified to go to duke or stanford or the like, but if by some miracle I was, I wouldn't complain to them that they should lower their rates simply because it was too rich for my blood.

You wanna go to college? Find a way to pay for it. Can't pay for it? Go to a different college.

Actually, it is the state's responsibility to educate its citizenry so that state can be competitive in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.

Free/cheap higher education to all? No. But reasonably affordable access to higher education? Yes.

That shouldn't be the way a society thinks about its brightest students. A student makes a 1400 on the SAT and has an A average throughout high school belongs in college. That student shouldn't be forced into another career path (probably trade) because it cost around $22,000 a year to attend South Carolina (tuition, fees, room & board, etc.).

It's affordable because of the explosion of student loans. The price of college has gone up 1100% since the 90's. That's insane. I knew plenty of kids at Auburn that could essentially work their way through school in the 90's. Now, you'd need to make $100k a year to work your way through school.

the principle is the same though. YOu can't say what a college should or shouldn't charge people. As long as people continue to pay it (which they will), tuition will continue to go up.

So dense.

I didn't say it should be free. I just didn't say that the the rapid rise in tuition over the past years isn't right. According to CollegeBoard, 4 years public tuition has increased by 225% over the past 30 years. That is indefensible.
