Which ultimately decides who"deserves" the degree. You pay for school, you get the degree. Deal with it.

Agree.

Those who earn their slot/slice of TOPS. No the "needy."

Merit and intelligence should decided who deserves a degree, not money.

Yes it is. And the change is coming. Deal with it.

At least you have TOPS. Some states aren't nearly as generous. But it is ok, we can go dig ditches and get started on our careers by the time we are 30 or 35.

No, a degree is not a right. If one can afford to attend college then they have the privilege to earn a degree. Dang Soviets in here...

Yup. If you're smart enough but don't have the money then apply for scholarships.

You shouldn't get to do anything just because you "qualify". If that's how it worked then everyone would have a job.

That is a very false statement.

I remember a guy on here telling me his daughter was going to indian university for 60 k a year for a music degree a fricking music degree. What an awful investment. My opinion is if you want to pay this much for college you make the decision to go there after they tell you how much it is, don't have sticker shock when they come to collect their money when you graduate. There are other affordable options like junior college. I went through junior college after knowing my family couldn't afford to pay my tuition and I think I may have inucurred about 15k in student loans vs 75k for going to university. I made that choice knowing that I would rather pay back 15k vs 75k. IMO it was very black and white and an easy decision to make. Now that I make pretty good money I am going back to university to get my graduate degree and I'm not taking out any loans for it.

But you're ok with the present cost of attending a university? You don't think that tuition has increased too much. That was the original intent of this tread I believe.

Where did I say it was a right? Maybe you should have spent some extra college time taking a reading comprehension class.

There was also a benefit vs cost for me to get my graduate degree. I can go from making between 75-90 k a year to over 200k a year with the right job. LIke I said I went to juco for my original degree until I could afford to attend the university. If kids made smarter choices universities would prob go out of buisness until they lowered there tuition, until then the cost is what is and it is what people are willing pay for it.

Do qualifications automatically mean someone is deserving of special treatment?

I believe there is a term for this train of thought.

Don't need to be capped. They need grant and student loan reforms.

I agree. In the early 1980's, National Direct Student Loans carried a 5% interest rate and Guaranteed Student Loans from a local bank were at 7%. This was when mortgage rates were at 16%. Now, mortgage rates are at 4%, and student loans are still at 7%? I just don't get it. Student loans these days should be more like 3-4% interest.

The people who are disagreeing in this thread are equating a person saying "college is too expensive" to "college should be free and everyone should be provided higher education". That is not what I'm saying.

They give public universities free passes for charging what they charge.

Smart decision. I guess some people are not smart enough to think this way.

Good ole laissez faire attitude.

If you cant afford the $800 car note on your BMW, then...

But I guess its BMW's fault

more risk involved with a student loan. What can a lender recoup from a student loan if it defaults?

They can garnish your wages. You can't discharge student loan debt through bankruptcy like you can a mortgage or personal loan.

I'd say it's less risky than a mortgage but there's no asset to repossess upon default.
