Polygamy has traditionally been used as a tool to marry girls before the age of consent, or arrange marriages for political and social benefit, and to defraud the government.

That said, I imagine it’d cause a huge cluster frick with our current tax system since it benefits married men/women.

There shouldn't be any tax breaks from being married.

And divorce/family courts.

This could use an overhaul regardless.

If legal, you still couldn't marry before the age of consent.

You can't throw a rock in a coffee shop without hitting 3 people who claim to be pansexual and identify as trees, so who really gives a shite about anything anymore

legalize all of it

Obviously. The point here is that polygamy has always been about more than just a man who wants to spread the love. Legalizing it probably won't change the fact that people are selling their daughters off in the name of religious doctrine.

100% agree. Marriage, in a perfect world, would be up to the church/organization granting a certificate/license. It shouldn’t be my business nor the governments who can legally be married.

Also agree. It’s a certified cluster as is.

Not without an overhaul of Insurance, Pension, Inheritance, Divorce, Alimony laws. Along with much better child protective services.

Government shouldn’t be involved in marriage in the first place

Isn't the only break, just being able to file jointly? I dont seem to recall any additional monies in joint exemptions

No, we do not know what came first, religious marriage or the contractual marriage that affords you benefits and rights for things like property and children.

Meh, it should be required to list mother father of children, thus giving both custody and responsibility of each child.
Any common property, like a house, should be listed as"Co-owners", or the like.
Marriage has no business being regulated by the State.

Only if you reevaluate all laws based on a new variable. Head of household tax, divorce laws, Insurance coverage of family, etc.

What would happen if 20M people all decided to Legally marry, would one insurance fanily plan cover everyone?

Marriage is supposed to be a religious thing, right?
So, IMO government should not regulate nor need to recognize anything about any marriage.

The better question is if govt should be involved in marriage at all.

Slope is greased.

Slippery

1. Sure

2. Polyandry

3. And then mixed group.
No more than 1 more of whatever sex.
So for example 2 guys 3 women.

As things now stand following the legalization of gay marriage, I don’t see how the current polygamy laws could survive a legal challenge.
