Mardi Gras, which in English means Fat Tuesday, is the day before lent. Its a day to indulge before having to sacrifice during lent.
What you are referring to is what is known as Carnival Season, which starts January 6th, which is known as King's Day.

So yeah, as a non-Louisianan who has never been to Mardi Gras, I did not realize the parades stretch out over time like that. I googled “when is Mardi Gras” and it said 02/25.

So someone who isn't from here and has never been to Mardi Gras, is qualified to ask if it should have been cancelled.
This is an outstanding O-T thread.
To answer your questions, if we knew the extend of the future potential threat by say 2/15, I guess we could have cancelled the second weekend of parades. But people still would have come. So, then we would have had to shut down all the bars and restaurants as well. And then try to beg people not to travel here at all, which means asking hotels to relax cancellation policies, etc.
There are a number of people on the O-T who think canceling things, today, is stupid. No way 5 weeks ago we would have done that.
