Mardi Gras was on Feb 25th.

Feb 19: Thousands of Americans voluntary self-quarantine after returning from China

From the OT Coronavirus Megathread

quote:

Feb 24:

You can call it a coverup, complacency, incompetence, or whatever you please. If you think it's a coincidence that countries running more tests are finding more cases and more deaths, you're naive or worse. Of course we're missing signficant numbers of cases; it's a contagious disease and it's spreading around the globe.

The US either has either chosen not to test to avoid a panic, or we don't have the ability. Or, if you're gullible, we're so much more advanced than the rest of the world that we can accurately model these brand new virus numbers and skip the testing. LINK

quote:

Richard H. Ebright @R_H_Ebright

China has performed nearly 200,000 tests. South Korea has performed nearly 28,000 tests. Meanwhile, US--with most expensive, but most dysfunctional, healthcare system on planet--has performed just 414 tests and has little or no capacity to perform more (https://cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html…)

Manu Raju @mkraju

All senators will be briefed tomorrow in classified setting on Coronavirus, per Senate sources. They will hear from officials from a variety of agencies, including HHS, DHS, CDC, NIH and State. It comes as administration preps emergency funding request to deal with outbreak

Those who were paying attention knew with 99% certainty the virus was here and spreading before Feb 25th. I would be SHOCKED if there wasn’t at least a phone call to LA’s governor or New Orleans mayor from the DHS recommending that Mardi Gras be canceled out of precaution. Even if that phone call didn’t happen, the people in charge of these events did not have their head where it should have been and did not exercise proper judgment. It should have been canceled.

Money does strange things to people's judgement, doesn't it?

Probably. Can you imagine how much we all would have bitched about it too?

This is like asking whether or not the US military should have had fighter jets flying around New York City on 9/11.

At the time, what did they have to base the decision on? Its easy to say they should have after the fact.

I didn’t start paying serious attention to coronavirus news until Feb 26th. On that day I posted this:

quote:

If you’re able to work from home with minimal adverse impact on your job, should you do it? I’m in eastern PA. Long Island and Massachusetts aren’t super far away and they currently have hundreds of people in voluntary quarantine. It could easily spread far before we know what’s up.

If someone like me, who’s not in charge of shite much less a huge event that brings in people from all over, could arrive to that question on Feb 26th after not paying much attention at all to coronavirus, then people in charge of Mardi Gras should have been able to spot it coming at least a handful of days prior to Feb 25th.

My float practiced social distancing beautifully. I was proud to serve.

Hindsight is always 20/20 you know.

But it would not have worked at all. At the time there were only a handful of cases in the U.S. Maybe a handful of deaths, too.

Even if you cancelled Mardi Gras, that was not gonna stop hundreds and probably thousands of people from congregating in New Orleans. The police would have certainly had their hands full trying to contain that crowd

He is referring to the actual date of Mardi Gras.. Fat Tuesday was on Feb 25th. Mardi Gras weekend (which started on Friday, Feb 21, 2020) is when the most people were in New Orleans celebrating Mardi Gras (or celebrating the days leading up to Mardi Gras which is referred to as just "Mardi Gras").

I was in NOLA for Mardi Gras weekend and can assure you that it was worth it, even if I had gotten the 'rona.
