git rid of the apex in an area and watch how quick the other ones completely take over.

The elimination of wolves is directly to blame for the explosion of the coyote population across the country.
ETA: Mesopredators are usually kept in check by apex predators for various reasons, not just conflict between the two. A mesopredator release happens when you remove an apex predator from an ecosystem, and release the mesopredator from the pressure of the apex predator. If both predators share prey sources, then you have a boom in those prey sources. That leads to a boom in population of the mesopredator. So, you have more numbers of mesopredators that no longer have a natural check in the ecosystem. They have free run, and it impacts everything else in the food web, leading to the eventual decline in prey species. That's particularly a problem for endangered prey species. It also leads to the mesopredator expanding its range, being emboldened, coming into closer and closer contact with humans, and wiping out food sources in areas already under pressure from other factors such as habitat loss and fragmentation.

There's a video out there of one of these things absolutely mauling a (still living) pregnant deer. At some point the newborn fawn falls out and the dragon just nonchalantly lifts it up and swallows it whole. That baby deer went from womb to tomb in less than a minute.

I saw a video where a guy injected a steak with Komodo Dragon saliva. Holy crap, a few days later that steak was a rotten pile of goup. You don't want to get bitten by one of those things. Back when she was still an attractive movie star, Sharon Stone arranged for her husband to have a more personal zoo experience where he was escorted into the animal enclosures. A Komodo bit his foot and they rushed him to the hospital for treatment.

Grizzly bears are similar. One of their best feeding times of the year is elk calving season. Immediately after birth the mother elk will stash the baby somewhere until it has its legs under it and can walk. Facts. My dog can’t run around the neighborhood and jump peoples fences and get in there yards without being caught put in the pound and me having to bail him out or let him get put down. So there is no reason cats should be allowed these privileges.
