Should kids participate in dog burial?

Our 11 year old Boxer/American Bulldog mix doesn't have much left. She's on seizure medication which works for a few weeks until her condition exacerbates and requires a higher dosage. Soon she won't be able to go any higher; but more importantly, her quality of life continues to decline rapidly.
We want to bury her on our property; however, we have a 5 y/o daughter and a 2-1/2 y/o son. Does anyone have experience with burying a family pet with young kids present? How young is too young for them to watch the burial? Should we chalk it up as a life lesson learned and let them be present?

Are they any good with a shovel?

You should do whatever works for your family. We got our dog cremated which may be a solution for you if you think that seeing your family dog dead will affect them in a bad way.
It could be a good teaching situation, but I'd be careful to not give your kids a complex about dead pets if you don't think they will handle it well.

I wouldn't at those ages. Just bury the dog and tell them it went to dog heaven.

I could take you to the house I grew up at and show you where I buried every animal I ever had. From a fish to a cat to a bird to a dog and stuff in between.
I could also show you where my friends buried their pets on their property.
So yes and over age 4 I think is appropriate.
Just don't take them up to that old Indian burial ground cause sometimes dead is better.

I mean, it’s a good way to teach them about death and loss. It really depends on the maturity level of your kids. Only you can amswer that.

This was my first thought also
Too young to dig, too young to really understand death. Maybe seeing the pet go in the ground is more than I would want in my kids head at such an early age.

I think dog burials are silly and people put too much into it. But I was raised in country around dogs, chickens, cows etc. We were raised that while you might love that dog it is just a animal not a human. You know your kids best, how will they handle it? It could be a good teaching moment or it might be something you want to keep them away from. Use your judgement, you will know.

I second cremation. You get a nice wooden box with their ashes, and a paw print in a cement tile and/or a snip of fur.
Some may see this as macabre, but it really helped my (then) 7-yo daughter cope.
frick the haters. Dogs are family.

Yep. Just put down our 15 year old Golden this morning. Kids and wife (21 and 18) were there for the vet to administer the anesthetic and the euthanasia drug. Plowed her with roast beef, peanut butter, bones, treats, and whatever the hell she wanted for the last few days I cried like a fricking baby. Getting her cremated at Heaven's Pets. She was like another child.

We have a place in the back of my parent’s backyard where we buried all of our childhood animals (one cat, three dogs). I was about 5-6 when we buried our cat and remember being there when they buried her. Kids should be ok as long as you talk to them about what’s happening.

I’ve buried multiple pets on our property. My kids were always aware that the pet had died, but we didn’t have a ceremony or make a production out of it, and I’m pretty sure I did the actual burial when my kids weren’t home.
