It's not more for me, just wanted some opinions from folks that have dealt with this and young kids.

My youngest won't really understand but my 5 y/o will definitely know - she's already brought up conversations about death before, although I'm sure she doesn't quite understand the finality of it.

I believe you receive the dog from the Vet in a bag, so no one will actually see our dog being buried. Either way I don't think we'll make up stories, we'll say she is dead and no longer with us. Only question is whether we allow them to be there or if we just say "Here lies Betsy".

We went through this just a couple years ago with the exact same aged kids, except it was with one of our cats. We ended up putting him down but before we did, we brought the girls to the vet and they allowed them to spend a little time with him and tell him they hoped he got better soon. We ended up telling them later that night that he was just too sick and he went to heaven with all of the other animals they knew about from other family members. I did however bury him when they were at school and had everything done by the time they were home. One thing that the vet recommended to us, and I really think it helped alot, was that we leave a small toy for each child (we got them a stuffed animal kitten) with a note from the deceased pet at the front door. It basically just said he missed them but that he felt so much better and was having so much fun playing with all the other animals. The smiles on their faces made it all worth it bc they definitely took it hard since they had grown up with him since they could be around him. Interestingly enough, they are 9 and 7 now and theres yet to be a night they haven't slept without those stuffed animals in their bed.

This is awesome stuff. Thanks.

No problem. Hope it goes well for you and your kids take it as well as ours did. Every so often my oldest will bring him up and say she wished he hadnt died but I just remind her Of how sick he had gotten and she agrees he didn’t deserve to be like that.

Unfortunately, that male cats birth sister is probably counting down her days now as well (about to be 15yo). She has thyroid issues so keeping weight on her has been somewhat tough. To make matters worse, my two older girls have bunk beds and that cat sleeps in one of their beds pretty much every night. They will take it much better since they are older but my 3yo will probably take it hard since she is constantly playing with that cat every chance she gets.

I say no. They are too young. They will get enough death in their lives soon enough.
But I was a terrible parent.. soooo

When I was five, a neighbor poisoned my cat. My grandmother told about how she and her brother and sisters had funerals for all their pets, how they dressed, gathered flowers and put the pet in the ground. That made me feel better.

With irony I can tell you that that same neighbor was cremated, and her nephew spread her ashes in our meadow without asking permission. And the fall flood happened soon thereafter so her ashes when down stream to the sewage treatment plant.

When I sold my childhood home, it did hit me hard that I was selling my pets' burying grounds.

You should go get your daughter one of those cricket youth .22 rifles then let her put the dog down. The way it’s supposed to be.

Just don't take them up to that old Indian burial ground cause sometimes dead is better.
What do you mean? Serious question.

As long as it’s not a Pet sematary type ritual ala Stephen King.

There’s this little book by Stephen King called Pet Sematery that was made into a major motion picture. Pretty sure he’s referencing that. If not, he’s pretty strange.

I think they are too young. We did that one time with a small pet and our dog dug it up. Now that was traumatic.

I may be a little “old school”, but think they need to begin to understand life’s process early. Easier with a pup then with grandpa.
